Sheep farming in the UK has caused more ecological destruction than the entire built environment. This, including parks and gardens, covers 1.7m hectares. Sheep cover 4m hectares. In my experience, there's a lot more wildlife in cities than on most upland sheep ranches.
@GeorgeMonbiot Sheep cover 4m ha - source of information please? (impartial preferably).
@GeorgeMonbiot Really? Please present evidence. As someone who advises on "built environment" issues includes transport infrastructure, roads, airports, offices, shopping malls, housing, manufacturing materials & transport; cement / glass/ cladding industry, daily energy costs per building etc
@GeorgeMonbiot 'In my experience', which happens to be evidence based, as a scientist, farmer and a qualified conservationist - you don't half talk some rubbish!! What the heck is a sheep ranch?? #WeAreWelshFarming
@GeorgeMonbiot In my experience social media has seen a rapid increase in meaningless, ambiguous statements which actually inform you of nothing ! Define ecological destruction ,12 inches of concrete compared to upland grazing and soil ecosystems is ridiculous , but of course you know that
@GeorgeMonbiot I'm very happy to say that my experience of sheep 'ranching' doesn't match your description at all. The hill is home to many, not just sheep.
@GeorgeMonbiot Silly talk & a LIE. We've otter, voles, great crested newts,red squirrel (SAVED by sheep farmer Esme Kirby) stoats red kite etc. All you have cities proliferation grey squirrel foxes & magpies & haven't even seen hedgehog London donkeys years.Daily sight much rural Wales
@GeorgeMonbiot Do you actually come out into the countryside? I see you were missing at the recent protests against HS2 which is about to go through ancient woodland. Does that not feature high on your agenda?
@GeorgeMonbiot Quite agree George, moved from Bedfordshire to the Berwyn's. As a wildlife photographer I have to head back to Bedfordshire or indeed London to photograph many species. Too much persecution up here for many species to survive in numbers. Plus loss of habitat due to over grazing.
@GeorgeMonbiot Are you out of prison yet?? Maybe when your back in your summer house in Wales you can on our farm where you can show me the ecological destruction
@GeorgeMonbiot "Ranches" - have you ever been to an upland farm? Or are you just quoting US or AUS anti farming propaganda?
@GeorgeMonbiot What exactly is your experience of living on sheep-farming uplands?
@GeorgeMonbiot Blydi hell they let you out đâšď¸
@GeorgeMonbiot You Sir are a bloody hypocrite! You are anti-livestock because as a Vegan you don't like the thought of an animal dying to feed us Omnivores. The environment issue you constantly drag up is a smoke screen. You just don't like ordinary folk eating meat ! #YouWillNotWin
@GeorgeMonbiot Sheep ranches! Pmsl, remind me George, wasnât âsheep sanctuaryâsâ your idea too?
@GeorgeMonbiot What utter twaddle.
@GeorgeMonbiot Nature's principal enemy is not sheep but people? Not extractive industries but people? Not weak National Park Authorities or foolish politicians but people? Just lots of ordinary people living their normal lives? And commercial organisations wishing to earn money?
@GeorgeMonbiot "Your experience" does not matter. We need scientific references, or please shut up your nonsense.
@GeorgeMonbiot Ok... get rid of sheep. But what warm, renewable fibre are we chilly Brits going to wear after we ban marine-polluting plastic fleeces? Are there enough charity shop woollen jumpers to go round? Iâm not un-serious.
@GeorgeMonbiot Bullshit
@GeorgeMonbiot @mark_lynas What do you smoke George to come up with this rubbish continually?
@GeorgeMonbiot You had something there for a minute. Then you went too far. The urban environment is currently warming the earth. While UK sheep farming is a concern, I wish you'd pick on the big boys more. Not the little man.
@GeorgeMonbiot Clearly you need to try going out and actually looking at one of these upland sheep ranches, as yet again you are spouting complete and utter bollox.. however you could be mixing them up with the wildlife deserts that are created by ârewildingâ
@GeorgeMonbiot I'm sorry but what utter bollocks.I have grown up with sheep and i also price building work. I have seen countless greenfield sites disappear under concrete/tarmac. Orchards grubbed out for schools,woodland cleared for houses, eco homes that use products that are far from eco....
@GeorgeMonbiot George, you do speak a load of bollocks.
@GeorgeMonbiot Do you wake up in the morning and just spout any shite that pops into your head?
@GeorgeMonbiot @mark_lynas Please cite figures and statistical data for this outrageous claim. Carbon upcyclers such as sheep and cattle are the only efficient carbon sinks in the natural world and are highly efficient, they also graze country where there is basically zero biodiversity . Cite now or ssshh!
@GeorgeMonbiot more #VeganLies
@GeorgeMonbiot Stupid boy
@GeorgeMonbiot Idiot!you donât know your arse from your elbow!đ¤Ą
@GeorgeMonbiot âRanches?â
@GeorgeMonbiot Then as usual, you know nothing.
@GeorgeMonbiot I have 13 acres of Welsh Hill grazed by 30 sheep. I have a botanical survey showing over 40 species of plants, including some rarer ones. We have buzzards, kites, peregrine falcons, foxes and badgers. My sheep are grass fed, bred for the hills and produce ethical wool.
