As an ethics committee, we have produced COVID-19 guidance for students doing empirical projects. For many it will require suspending data collection, moving to online platforms, or redesigning projects. Here are some resources & examples for qualitative projects (1/n)
This book provides excellent guides on methods of data collection that don’t require face-to-face interaction: Braun, V., Clarke, V., & Gray, D. (Eds.). (2017). Collecting qualitative data: A practical guide to textual, media and virtual techniques. Cambridge University Press

An article I’ve written for @LSEImpactBlog on carrying out qualitative research under lockdown
@DrAdamJowett Do you mean a research ethics committee?
@sridhartweet Yes! Sorry should have been clearer
@DrAdamJowett This is really helpful. Thanks Adam! I might have missed this, but do you have the ethics guidelines you can share?
@C_L_Fox Most of it related to internal ethics processes and was first and foremost telling students to stop collecting data face-to-face just before we went into lockdown. I’ve discussed the general points here: https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/impact...
@DrAdamJowett Are you able to share your guidelines?
@alex_fisher1969 I’d need to check & some will be specific to our ethics processes. But essentially avoid face-to-face data collection; suspend, move to online collection or redesign; submit an ethics amendment to ethics committee; consider issues of recording consent; keep participants informed
@DrAdamJowett My blog post, Fieldwork in the Times of COVID-19: Doing Ethnography During a Pandemic http://www.raulpacheco.org/202... may be of interest to anybody doing qualitative work, particulary ethnographic, in the times of COVID.
@DrAdamJowett @raulpacheco Thanks for these resources👍👍👍
@DrAdamJowett Thanks for these resources - we were only just discussing these issues in an @aphasiacre meeting! Very timely @DrAnnieJHill @dr_epower @MarcellaC_SP @MichelleAttard8
@DrAdamJowett @srf_aku @AKUGlobal @ShireenBhamani @RKarmaliani this thread is the best guidance for alternate approaches to f2f data collection in Qualitative Research during #COVID19
@DrAdamJowett Thank you. Great resources for PGT students designing dissertation projects @HouseMoray @MorayHouseCEID @MScEd_MHSES
@DrAdamJowett @alicia_m_hughes @JoHudson13 A few mentions in this thread about using Zoom/Skype etc for interviews may be useful for compass/FLEX ?
@DrAdamJowett These are fantastic. Thanks for sharing. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to best meaningfully engage (and ideally codesign) remotely with older adults, aged 65-80 with some tech familiarity?
@DrAdamJowett @McCreesh_Karen @modonoghue1995 worth a read!
@DrAdamJowett This is fantastic thank you for doing this. Have shared with my team :)
@DrAdamJowett @chloe_degrood @laryssa_kemp @JParsonsLeigh @kmfiest @KarlaKrewulak @carmenccpa @k_plotnikoff take a look, good resources for our team!
@DrAdamJowett @MaleEDResearch Thanks so much for this - I'm currently pondering how to adapt my own part completed data collection.
@DrAdamJowett cc: @nsingal14 @CamillaHCH These resources look very pertinent and useful.
