okay so first thing’s first. what do you like? do you want simple pierrot? classic auguste? avant garde something or other? or do you just want some basic accentuating clown shapes? take a lil time to look through clown images online to gather what you like so you have direction!

if you don’t know, just go in with some basics! the pointed or rounded under eye, the round cheeks, the hi-lit nose, and a basic color palette all make for a good clown. you don’t have to be elaborate, just do what you’re comfy with!

ok so now you have a vague idea of what you want to do. how are you going to do it? there are TONS of ways. i’m just gonna go through what i do and the supplies i use and you can apply those as starting points- but get creative!

if you’re like me and don’t want to bleach or shave your eyebrows, but still wanna paint over them, i like to use a regular washable elmer’s glue stick to pat em down and make them easier to paint over. comes off easily with make up wipes!

next, the base. you do not have to do that white face base, but if you want to, mehron is my shit. i use beauty blenders to apply it, foundation optional. if you want a middle ground, get some super light powder foundation to achieve a lighter effect! https://a.co/d/1tzfw5k

you’ve made your face a blank canvas, now put the art on it! you can use anything here. i mean it. any eyeliner or eyeshadow works, you don’t have to spring for professional paint (but if you want to it’s easily bought on amazon!)

but get creative too! i like to stick other random shit on my face for funsies (i use lash glue for this). a clown is by definition extra as hell, so don’t be afraid to get extra too!

let’s talk briefly about accessories. luckily, clown shit can be fairly cheap! i got a clown horn a while back for $8 and it’s one of my prized possessions. neck pieces of all kind are available for cheap on amazon and etsy, just search “clown ruffle” and go to town!

side note- my jester collar is one of my favorite things i own, and if you wanna get jester-y, it’s gonna be a little more costly since they’re not as hot a commodity currently. but look for renfair costume makers, they’re gonna be your best bet for a similar piece!

dressing like a fool is great because it’s inherently a slapdash affair. fools are by nature hastily put together and an absolute mishmash, so don’t feel like you have to look Vogue-worthy to try it. it’s all about having fun!
