okay listen don't come for me but thranto au where instead of finally receiving his promotion eli gets dragged off and put into prison with cassian bc it's just after aldani and some of thrawn's enemies want to remind him off his place and keep him in check, worried he's too soft
just that ofc it absolutely backfires and tips both thrawn and eli fully over into "actually fuck the empire" and so eli ends up helping cassian start a prison riot, while thrawn finds luthen and mon, 100% primed and ready to strangle palp with his own two hands 🔪🔪
wait hold on i can make this worse - eli eventually escapes with cassian but he has no clue thrawn also switched sides so he's like "fuck if we ever want to have a chance i need to take him down" and it's so painful but he just can't let the empire win no matter the cost
he tracks him down and nearly succeeds just that when he's got thrawn pinned on the floor, vibro blade to his neck, thrawn doesn't even struggle, just looks at him with such awe in his eyes and says "i knew you could make it" and oh fuck okay they are in this together to the end
