Sher Shah Suri, the silver coin and Rupee. What exactly happened during his reign (1537 - 1545)? #Thread

Coinage during the Delhi Sultanate did not have a uniform consistent weight. This must have created problems for money changers, traders & common man. The inconsistency however continued. Even in ancient India coins were standardised but the DS didn't implement it.

With the Mughal invasion came the Central Asian coins. Babur issued some degree of consistent coinage but it was not until SSS took power, the coins were standardised in terms of weight. This in a way was bringing the old standardisation back.

The standardisation made trade easy and the later Mughals saw the benefits and stuck to the standrad weight of around 11.5 gm. SSS named his silver coin Rupiya, which was an established term for a silver coin since at least the second urbanisation period.

Other than standardising the coinage, SSS also repaired the ancient uttarpatha, the prominent trade route from Gandhara to the ports in the Ganga delta.
