My wipEout rewrite only works with OpenGL, but I set up the code in a way to potentially support other rendering backends. To test whether this actually works, I implemented a very bare-bones wireframe software renderer. Almost playable!
That was a lot of fun! First time I ever attempted a software 3D renderer. Maybe this could become a proper rendering backend. Code is here: https://github.com/phoboslab/w...
@phoboslab AFAICR there was a cheat code on PSX that low rendered almost to wireframes and I loved it
@_oVerde Had to look it up. Apparently it was only available on the Saturn(!) version of Wipeout 2097. But it looks glorious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
@phoboslab any idea how many kilobytes it takes up when zipped? ;P
@phoboslab Reminds me of the games on the Nintendo Virtual Boy
@phoboslab "Move that Donkey!"
@phoboslab @_GABRIELOC new game mode for your game :P
@phoboslab I can't explain *why*, but I *love* this aesthetic. Reminds me of one of my favorite jam games: https://zaphyk.itch.io/neon-sk...
@phoboslab @TIKIPODltd Brings back lovely memories of getting the DOS port up and running initially with white lines vs triangles, at the time it was a happy day indeed.
@phoboslab Getting strong Rez vibes from this one! I think Wipeout and Rez share a lot, so the mashup might end up working really well! Let's throw in some Underworld tracks and let it roll!
@phoboslab this can only mean one thing.. path traced wipeout is upon us!
@phoboslab Oh nice! I would be interested on knowing how you write a 3d software renderer
@phoboslab I love the clean geometry. Each triangle is well utilized.
@phoboslab Never played wipeout but this sort of reminds me of MegaRace
@phoboslab One of the best games ever! Nice
@phoboslab Looks like a vectrex throwback. I'd suggest making this wireframe a choice in the game itself.
@phoboslab AMAZING Looks like the handling is there too. Wipeout and wipeout2097 had some very strict handling that made the game great fun but super hard. One bump and you'd loose all your speed in the first. None of the others in the series managed the feel.
@phoboslab epic, it actually moves like WipeOut 2097
@phoboslab i wonder how it looks like if u subdivide the width and depth by 32 in the map
@phoboslab I've been want in wipEout on PC for so long I could play this wire frame for hours on end
@phoboslab An online version where we could play with players from all over the world... that would be amazing
@phoboslab I would keep refining, but definitely keep this wire fram, this looks dope.
@phoboslab Silly question but does your build also@support that reverb tunnel and music effect that was on psx too? This was something I hated that the old of version didn’t have. And another cool question. Would link play ever be implemented?
@phoboslab That soundtrack slapped. Late 90s were had some long nights of wipeout with friends.
@phoboslab Reminds me of Star Wars vector rendering
@phoboslab Instafollow + like. Thats awesome! Nostalgia maximus
