Facebook Ad Tip: A thumbnail can either make or break your ad After testing 100s of thumbnails, I’ve found these 3 winning styles that always work and are favored by FB & users Let's break why [examples included]
1) Close-up face Similar to the hook of the ad, a close-up of a face works amazingly well as a thumbnail as well I guess people are more drawn to the ad when they see another person’s face I also found out it helps when you use a person/user that’s actually your target persona
2) Pain points with an X sign Using an X sign, or checkmark worked great for us as a static, so we started testing it on the thumbnail Oh boy, was that a good decision Combining it with a problem your target audience has is a match made in heaven
Other variations that work here are: - split-screen (problem on the left with an X sign, solution on the right with a green checkmark) - arrow instead of an X sign pointing at the problem
3) Close up of a product This works extremely well, even when you zoom the product the user can barely understand what the product actually is I saw it works extremely well with apparel and shoe niche I guess because the texture, material, and patterns are very important there

@IstvanicMarin when testing 3 different hooks of a video concept how do you set up the thumbnails? manually as the first frame or just let FB do it automatically?
@dtc_alchemist if the angle is in the hook, then I pick that one manually if it's not, then I pick a frame from the video that looks like could be the best performer (based on the styles I shared above, or the one I personally think would stop the scroll)
@IstvanicMarin Awesome break down
@AskStevenBlack thanks man!
@IstvanicMarin Isnt everybody pretty much on autoplay? Why would thumbnails matter these days?
@IstvanicMarin I'm curious - What would you say at the minimum you've seen as a % of increase in results coming from testing video ad thumbnails?
@justnlalonde don't have data like that i just see the creative does better compared to when I'm not selecting such a thumbnail
@IstvanicMarin Thanks for the awesome thread. Is the second variation when you have cross on left and checkmark on right not considered as before after image ?
@Amineecom1 not really
@IstvanicMarin You took this from an article
