I've got an hour, let's get into why I said I think Dean English meddled in the Warrior Nun fandom, shall we? Reasons why I think this fandom was never run by the fans, a thread🧵:
Now, here are a few of things I believe have happened, even though it's all speculative and I have zero concrete proof: 1) Dean English gave the campaign the domain. 2) The fans worked with Dean. 3) There was always gonna be a WN movie. 4) We didn't save jack shit.
👉ONE: THE WEB DOMAIN As I've explain on tumblr before (https://www.tumblr.com/lucy-we... the domain warriornun dot com most certain came from Dean English himself since it was associated with Perfect Circle Productions before Dec 2022. You can find screenshots on Wayback Machine.
👉TWO: FANS WORKED W/ DEAN It makes no sense Dean would give the fans a domain "anonymously" without getting something out of this. My theory is that Dean knew he had a small window to get media attention and to negotiate w/ whoever, but (1/6)
he couldn't be associated openly with the fan movement because of optics. Instead, the #SaveWarriorNun movement was packaged as a fan-run campaign. Now, here's where I don't understand: why would fans make phrases, organize events, do promo for free for so long? (2/6)
My guess is that they didn't, or at least they weren't paid in cash. My guess is that there's a reason why these fans forced this fandom to be positive and engaging for this long, and it's to make sure WN (Dean's Version) stays visible for as long as possible. (3/6)
And in exchange for their prolonged "cheerleading," Dean or the production company must've given them something. I would say the campaigners were paid in either attention from the production company, or they were fed "new developments." (4/6)
One of the reasons why I guess Dean would've done something like this is the fact that Ben Dunn mentioned NDAs out of the blue when @CocoCat38 messaged him. I am taking that as a "the lady doth protest too much" situation, but that's just me. (5/6)
And if you still think it's far-fetched, look how none of the campaigners were hyping up the last countdown, and how they immediately started attacking Dean, Ben, and the prod. company. I'm guessing an original WN film for months of work was not the deal they made. (6/6)
👉THREE: THE MOVIE WAS ALWAYS GONNA HAPPEN Do you honestly believe that they secured funding for three movies in six months? I don't. I think Dean always wanted to make his version of WN, and when Netflix cancelled the show, (1/4)
Dean either was forced to use his movie money to try and buy the rights from Netflix, OR! he realized he could simply sell his version as the "new story" of WN and push for that to happen. I'm fairly certain Dean wanted to do the latter from the get-go. (2/4)
From Ben Dunn's FB, we see that Dean failed to get the rights from Netflix in Jan, in that post of him asking if he had rights to "Bea, Vince, or Cam." Ben also made a couple of posts, all hoping that WN would be shopped by other platforms. (3/4)
Not to forget that Dean went through that phase of sharing "WN feature film" props and whatnot. I would guess that was around the time he decided to push forward with his WN film idea and wanted to see how we'd react. (No one cared.) (4/4) https://x.com/deengli/status/1...
👉 FOUR: WE DIDN'T SAVE JACK SHIT If Dean English had been meddling in the fandom from the start, and if the "executive level" fans had always known what's going on/been in contact with the production company, then all the average fans did was...getting played. (1/3)
I think at this point, a lot of us are disillusioned with Dean English's latest exploitive contest and his radio silence, and I think most of you would agree that it's highly likely that we inadvertently saved Dean's version of WN film. (2/3)
All I hope is that @deengli would come out and explain everything, because I, for one, am tired of the utter lack of transparency with this fandom. Enough with the useless countdowns, and maybe start apologizing to a fandom that got tricked and exploited. (3/3)
If you made it this far down my 1 a.m. rant, my deepest condolences. I wish I were more positive, and I really wish that I am completely wrong and this fandom didn't get manipulated into saving some guy's wet dream. For our sake and sanity, please let me be wrong.
