Many existing animisms/polytheisms have at least one minor deity or spirit whose origin lies in some people fìnding an image and thinking it was cool (Mami Wata in West Africa, Billiken in Siberia). This makes me suspicious of any systematic interpretation of ancient religion.
If you told someone with no knowledge of Christianity about Haitian Vodou, would they be able to tell that le Bon Dieu was a "foreign" divinity? I doubt it.
