Historian V.S.Agrawala points out that Hindu Murtis of Vrishnīs like Krishna, Balarama, Vishnu, Śiva, Kārttikeya, & Devis were already present in 1st c. CE due to the Bhagāvata movement in Mathura. The first images of Buddha as a human were based on existing Hindu iconography.
