2019: Huawei passes Apple to become the world's 2nd smartphone producer, closing in on Samsung 2019: US bans all Huawei products 2022: AI becomes most important tech, and AI needs a lot of semiconductors 2022: US bans sale of semiconductors to China 2023: TikTok becomes the top
@levelsio This only makes China more hungry and validated. Will US do the same if India reaches this level after few years ?
@vikaskookna If India chooses to not ally with US I think so
@levelsio There are interesting parallels to Japan in the 80s. In some sense Japan won manufacturing wise in cars. We just forced the. To build plants in the US with tariffs. Other companies is like consumer tech just lost over time like Sony. Not sure of the lessons but am curious to dig
@p_millerd Japan failed mostly due to the Plaza Accord making Japan overnight way more expensive and US cheaper
@levelsio 2009: China bans Facebook 2010: China bans Google 2014: China bans Instagram 2017: China bans Whatsapp 2019: China bans Twitch
@levelsio it's reciprocity: they don't let our companies in their market -- why would we let theirs in ours? our rules are more permissive than theirs -- you're noticing the edge cases where we do take action
@levelsio Now do all the times China bans or blocks US products and services
@levelsio China is one of the most anti-western countries around. It's true China has tariffs on the USA, but they've done the same to other countries that haven't been as aggressive like Australia. They are not a friendly country to outsiders.
@levelsio It's important to remember that China also bans many products, including tools from Meta, PayPal, and Google. Additionally, the Chinese government often subsidizes local companies by about 15% per product, allowing them to undercut international competition.
@levelsio And this is called Free markets?
@levelsio I’m not mad they’re making great things. I’m mad they stole the tech to do it. I’m mad we financed all of it. I’m mad they’re abusing ppl & freedoms to do it. But maybe the best thing is we stop doing business w/ them entirely. Like the soviets, let em do it all on their own
@levelsio A good book on this topic is "Trade wars are class wars"
@levelsio US Big Tech lobbying US Government for its own benefit. Pretty standard game.
@levelsio No free trade with communists. All we do is build out their industrial base so that they can be prepared to make war with us.
@levelsio Good ol’ protectionism Wrapped up in patriotism
@levelsio is it not a purpose of a government to help protect local industry? thats the major use of import taxes china does the same, bans and taxes on imports to make local substitutes more attractive the tik tok ban (admittedly political) has overly politicized this in general imo
@levelsio Honestly, only Europe is being naive and not doing similar things. Not only does the US do those things to protect their economy, but China does even more aggressively, I believe.
@levelsio This week Brazil banned all purchases from SheIn, placing taxes on it.
@levelsio Government is incapable of creating. All it knows how to do is restrict, prevent, and tax.
@levelsio Next thing you know the U.S. will ban genocide…
@levelsio 2023: Microsoft seems like it's winning the AI race 2024: EU threatens to fine Microsoft tens of billions because AI. 2016: Bombardier makes an attractive jet. 2017: Boeing makes sure that jets gets 300% tarrif. This is the age of deglobalization.
@levelsio EU regulates. US bans. China wins.
@levelsio It’s fascinating that they are seemingly trying to roll out communism in the West at the same time as rejecting communist countries taking over on the other hand.
@levelsio This plan to ban the competition isn't working, so I guess that's why they're trying to start a war instead. How's that going in the case of Russia? 😒
@levelsio Huawei does factually spy on its users for the CCP. I was in China multiple times during the brainwashing shift from Apple to Huawei. It was shocking to see the shift in the people during a short span. Huawei became a symbol for regular people to show compliance with the govt.
@levelsio Huawei cannot be trusted with telecom equipment Foxconn can be why? god knows
@levelsio The US/EU doesn't like competition it can not control. They all do it, but the west has the audacity to claim they're freer or morally superior.
@levelsio So... countries actually care about their technological & financial safety? Can't be true
@levelsio Now do the same comparing Chinese bans of US products
@levelsio Got to at least mention the decades of industrial espionage China conducted on western firms with little more than a slap on the wrist. From what I’ve gathered, their entire wind energy industry started from stolen IP of American and EU firms.
@levelsio America got soft in the last 20 years (with the exception of tech) But that will change in the next decade when we get rid off socialism from major governing offices.
@levelsio there are several words democracy, free market capitalism, human rights, rule of law, freedom of speech no doubt, they are considered important, but nothing comes above US preponderance, any of that comes in the way it's going to be brushed aside quite easily
@levelsio Freedom, lol
@levelsio These causal links are off the mark.
