For @MacAddressYT viewers wondering why I’ve been silent for a while, here’s the story... I’ve always been envious of motorcyclists. They seem like fun. So last summer when Andrew came into my office talking about doing the course, I jumped on it. /10
It took us time. We completed the motorcycle course in Oct. After, all I wanted was to get better. But, I didn’t get my own bike until New Years. And being a learner in the winter, meant the only time I could even go out for a ride was on a clear, not too cold, weekend day.
That weekend came in the middle of March. And so I marched to where my bike was stored, cleaned and lubed the chain and with a little daylight left I suited up and took my bike for a spin just in the neighbourhood.
There’s a lot to re-familiarize myself with. My bike has a jumpy throttle. On one curve I went wide for some reason, and then turning around another corner felt great. Clearly, I have to practice turning. But after trying a few quick wrist twists, I understood why people ride.
That Sunday, I went out with my brother-in-law. 45 mins in, the straight road we were on was soon to end. I saw the curve ahead, and slowed down. But in the turn, I was going wide again! Slightly panicked, I remembered, “look where you want to go.” And so I did.
My handlebars started wobbling. “Oh. This is happening today?!” I shouted. And yeah.. I high-sided off the bike. I definitely did something wrong. The family who live on the corner and helped call the ambulance said that they’ve many crashes over the 50 years they been there.
At the hospital I learned that I broke my pinky toe, my top right rib – which poked a hole in my lung – and my scapula, including the glenoid (which is the socket). Treatment wise, the lung required a chest tube to be inserted. And I’m told a glenoid break is quite rare.
That meant I had to switch hospitals to get the surgery. All told I was two weeks in hospital. I left after Easter with a screw in my shoulder. Surgery recovery is what has kept me away for two months as it’s been a slow rebuild. I’m healing 1% per day.
I got the worst case of the best-case scenario. Because despite the deep break and fix, I will be able to get my full range of motion back. Everyone from family, friend and work have been so wonderful. I appreciate all they’ve done to help me through this.
Now, will I get back on a motorbike? Yes. I already bought a new one. It was my 2nd time out, with less than 100km in the saddle. I feel like I didn’t get a chance. My inexperience is what caused the crash. So I’d like to see what a couple of rides without one feel like. -fin
@horstpwr @MacAddressYT Great to hear you’re on the mend, and glad you’re still pursuing riding!
@LukeMiani @MacAddressYT Thanks Luke! I can’t wait to try again. The timing will be interesting. I’m told I’ll be fully mended around 3 months, so July 1st. Now, if I don’t pass my road test before my learners expires on July 23rd, I’ll have to start my licensing from scratch again. 😬
@horstpwr @MacAddressYT dude my class is soon and ever since i registered i’ve only heard accident stories, glad you’re getting better but fuck man it’s only making me more worried LMFAO
@_m0ab @MacAddressYT I mean, you probably will crash. Hopefully not as hard or as soon as I.
@horstpwr @MacAddressYT I can really recommend a track day, either one with a teacher or just to drive. It might sound scary, but you are way safer on a track, no traffic, if you fall you can slide and not instantly hit a tree or a rock. Keep up the healing!
@Ztaal3 @MacAddressYT I would absolutely love to get on a track!
@horstpwr @MacAddressYT Glad you’re on the mend!!!
@horstpwr @MacAddressYT I was wondering why there weren't any Mac Address videos lately! I'm glad you're recovering, hope to see you back soon!
@horstpwr @MacAddressYT Be safe bro. The stats for motorcycle injuries are very scary so please take all the time you need to train and prepare before hitting the road again.
@horstpwr @MacAddressYT Glad you’re still kicking. Please be safe. ❤️
@horstpwr @MacAddressYT You have been missed, glad you survived. Get better soon, and thank you for putting a pin in this Mac Address speculation. - sorry I had to. 🤣
@horstpwr @MacAddressYT Oh man that sucks. Sorry to hear. Mac Address has been amazing and I’ve missed it but at least you’re hopefully getting better.
@horstpwr @MacAddressYT Goddamn. Not a follower of the channel (not an Apple dude) but you seem cool, and I'm glad a fellow motorcycle lover isn't out a health bar. Get well soon.
@horstpwr @MacAddressYT Get well soon!!❤️
@horstpwr @MacAddressYT I’m glad you’re doing better! I have been wondering where MAC address has been, but your health is obviously the priority! I have no motorcycle experience, but I ride this little guy. Glad you’re back in the saddle, those speed wobbles are no joke.
@horstpwr @MacAddressYT Oh, thats what happened. Glad to hear you are both still alive, and working for LMG. Cant wait for your return to the camera!
@horstpwr @MacAddressYT So glad your on the mend, like yourself I came off on my second day. Thankfully my bike and ego were the only things hurt. That was 16 years ago, been riding ever since. Was worried this would put you off! If you see a Gen 1 Hayabusa around Langley, that's me, see you on to road!
@horstpwr @MacAddressYT Glad you’re alright, relatively. Maybe don’t mention this when you go for your test! Good luck! (But if you don’t pass, don’t fret. It’s a great excuse to get out and practice more.) Remember to stop in the outside of lanes, to avoid the oil from engines, that dinged me.
@horstpwr @MacAddressYT Hell yeah dude, glad you're okay and that you're not too afraid to keep riding. Keep the rubber side down next time! :P
@horstpwr @MacAddressYT Ooof - missed you buddy!! Get well soon! 🏍️💨
@horstpwr @MacAddressYT Hope you continue to recover and I'm excited to see you back! Thanks for letting us know what happened and keen to hear more biking stories in the future too :)
