we did it! 36 hours on the zephyr from san francisco to denver—the train is an excellent place for focus & flow trip report below
wrote a lil essay about the trip here http://jasmine.substack.com/p/...
@jasminewsun I was planning to do the same thing when I rode, but I just ended up pondering the scenery going by the entire time
@alanthefisher not a bad use of time either
@jasminewsun Did 25 hours on the coast starlight from seattle to sf recently and found the same thing - incredible space for focus
@goodhorsemen i want to do that one next! and an off-season cruise lol, though that’ll be less serene
@jasminewsun No room to sleep?
@samuelekpe nope! the seats recline and have plenty of legroom, also it was just one night
@jasminewsun Did this before and loved it. Say sitting up right in my coach chair. Ended up having a beer with these two Amish guys and an older blind man in the cafe car. True melting pot of people on there.
@matt_ambrogi the amish rock
@jasminewsun Went on the zephyr (Sacramento-Denver) and it was genuinely some of the most beautiful scenery i've seen ever
@j8ckfi love the photos!!
@jasminewsun I've loved my amtrak experiences, but am very covid cautious. How doable do you think it would be for someone who always masks in high trafficked/enclosed settings and only eats outside? Looks amazing!
@likethepotomac ah good point! i'm not sure the 36h trip is the best fit bc the vast majority of stops don't have time to deboard—and when we could get fresh air, it was only for 10m. so i think eating would be difficult! but there might be opps to do a shorter segment, fully masked
@jasminewsun i wanna do this so bad but im from se asia 🥲
@chantryrose how are the trains in SE asia??
@jasminewsun My elderly BIL had wistful memories of taking the train from Chicago to SF https://x.com/joelgarry/status...
@joelgarry yeah i could imagine it not being for everyone but i loved!
@jasminewsun What a great way to retreat. What camera did you take these with?
@marcbienaime just an iphone!
@jasminewsun what was the cost of this trip? and did it drop you off at that beautiful station in denver
@garusogilyog yes union station! cost about $125, don't know if it's cheaper in the off-season (july is peak)
@jasminewsun I remember when trains were a form of transportation.
@slarjy i mean i definitely wish they were more functional in the US too (though i'm doing NY to DC in a couple weeks for purely utilitarian reasons)
@jasminewsun Wait the zephyr I took didn't have wifi????
@PraliteMonks lol i kinda enjoyed not having wifi! i hotspotted when i needed to, but mostly it was nice to disconnect
@jasminewsun What camera did you use to take the landscapes?
@DudeWithTheCube haha literally my iphone
@jasminewsun What’s your filters/app on this photos? 👀
@ichikmarev no filters, all just my iphone
