I FINALLY got everything off the cloud I'm now paying 10x LESS money for BETTER infrastructure My AWS bill was ~$1,400/mo I got it down to less than $120/mo for literally better, beefier servers Fear of managing servers has a price: 10x your monthly infra bill

did I forget to mention I got 2x better performance too almost ALL pages started getting lower response times after migrating f.ex.: a page with a weird query with a prev avg of 1700ms now loads in 700ms (-60%) why? the new DB server is way beefier than my old AWS RDS instance

How I did it πŸ‘‡ https://rameerez.com/how-i-exi...

Well, this got viral Many people had VERY strong opinions on this I do, too So I wrote a blog post about it Β«Send this article to your friend who still thinks the cloud is a good ideaΒ» πŸ‘‡ https://rameerez.com/send-this...

@rameerez Welcome to Hetzner If you're in Hillsboro, Oregon we're neighbors in the same server rack http://pieter.com is there 😊

@levelsio πŸ‘‹ neighborino

@rameerez What did you migrate to? How long did it take? Cost of migration?

@StevenDickens3 hetzner ~1h migration once I had everything figured out, several days worth of testing and figuring things out before pulling the trigger on production cost: -$1,400 on AWS; $120 on Hetzner, no costs directly associated to the migration itself other than machines running

@rameerez What tooling you used to switch?

@rameerez what you gonna spend that extra $1280 per month on? bigger apartment. a new laptop. google ads. high quality steak. a home gym. a lot of apple pie. or maybe pudding. or race car driving like dhh does,(fiat 500 is possible with 1280) the options are literally endless

@pbertrand_dev man I'm getting some weird responses in the thread like people love burning money or something? I might be too dumb to get these people I literally saved 10x in monthly costs and still I get people arguing against it πŸ˜‚ like okay boss u enjoy your infra complexity I'll go cry

@rameerez The cloud is a case of collective hallucination. I have a written exercise here: https://logical.li/blog/empero...

@remotegus El Cloudillo πŸ˜‚

@rameerez Which machine did you get? A few days ago I found these beauties there... Hetzner really is king in quality/price! (I hope this recent hype they have been getting doesn't change this tho!) https://x.com/IaimforGOAT/stat...

@IaimforGOAT VPS CCX family no need to get bare metals or machines that big unless you have crazy prod loads

@rameerez Once you have to do something server related at 2am on a Saturday you'll think 10x is worth it. I remember handling our own servers. Amazing up time except for the one time a year it would have issues... Always at a horrible time. I'm open to moving off Azure... But it will

@drewwash I already had to do server related stuff at 2am on a Saturday while on AWS stuff breaks in prod all the time no matter the infra provider

@rameerez Reduced my bill 10x as well when moved all my projects to @Hetzner_Online VPSs. The performance is increased too.

@desunit @Hetzner_Online amazing, many people reporting similar stuff as us, crazy good

@rameerez @nate_hannon Product designed for cloud = inexpensive on cloud Product designed for legacy compute = extremely costly on cloud There's also major advantages of cloud hosting like security and geospatial distribution of services.

@medicgordus @nate_hannon "product designed for legacy compute" what does this even mean
