Apparently, you aren't allowed to contribute to FOSS if you were born in a «wrong country». It's a horrific precedent for Linux. Truly sad to see.
Linus knows the software drill all too well, yet still decides to shoot his project in the foot... Remember, software engineers, your creations must remain apolitical. People don't use or maintain your stuff for your views. They do it because it works for them.
Oh yes, before you ask, I'd be as distraught about this situation had it been any other nationality. The main point is that the contribution-based project itself suffers the most from this kind of decision. Try to keep politics out of the equation here.
@endermanch This you, apolitical cunt?
@mn_xrem Sending my sincerest condolences to the families of victims of the violent Crocus City Hall terror attack is political now? 🫤
@endermanch Quite a shame that politics are involved with software nowadays. 🙄
@endermanch By history knowledge he must mean when Finland partook in the genocide of the Russian people, particularly the single greatest crime of the siege of Leningrad.
@endermanch Yeah, that's horrible. I'm worried about where Linux is headed.
@endermanch Bullshit, plain and simple.
@endermanch They removed the names but not the contributions, how telling.
@endermanch Based Linus. He's right
@endermanch Yes, because there is a high probability that you are a spy for the country in which you were born, especially if your country dreams of world domination.
@endermanch Whose Crimea?
@endermanch Not because you were born in a «wrong country» but because your country doing «wrong things».
@endermanch Easily solved. Russia pull their troops back to their side of the border, come to an agreement with Ukraine and the world at large to help reconstruct what they destroyed. As they hold up their end of the deal, sanctions are gradually lifted.
@endermanch Seems like the Linux foundation wants more of that DoD money
@endermanch Based Linus
@endermanch Torvalds is a Finn. Do you know much about the history of that country?
@endermanch Apparently you are not allowed on a plane if you are a member of certain "wrong" organizations. Oh wait...
@endermanch there was actually a surprisingly reasonable followup here — tl;dr not all russians, but based on sanctioned employers list now, and change is just cosmetic and officials-pleasing
@endermanch it's called OPEN SOURCE they can still CONTRIBUTE they just no longer have complete write access also they were removed for association with a Russian company
@endermanch > "nooo you have to be apolotical 😥" > look inside profile > "Location: ...Kiev Oblast, Russia"
@endermanch yes it is saddening to see such moves because what's the point of FOSS then
@endermanch That's not true. Some Russians affiliated with the sanctioned state-controlled Sberbank were denied write access to the repos, not the permission to contribute to FOSS as you lie. In contrast to most westerners, Torvalds really knows what Russia is and what it's capable of.
@endermanch You need to look at it from the eyes of Linus, born in Finland, who is being threatened by RU since they joined NATO. https://www.newsweek.com/russi...
@endermanch Причина тряски?
@endermanch raise it with your government if you're not happy about how the rest of the world treats your country.
@endermanch Biden made sanctions against Russia, and a previous court decision says that working with software maintained and licensed by Americans is legally enforceable. Americans cannot have direct contact with Russia in any way, shape, or form. We are North Korea now.
@endermanch занив лох руснявий?
@endermanch The only wrong thing is him not doing it earlier.
@endermanch Womp womp
@endermanch it's hard to be apolitical when everyone else around you is politically against your country for reasons they don't even know
@endermanch Are they not going to revert it if sanctions are lifted? If it's for legal compliance, it sucks, but understandable
@endermanch Given that Sergei Brin was born in Moscow, Russia (he is Russian) why aren't we banning Google?
