People got mad at this even though it is objectively true.

@HeerJeet Engineer here: go fuck yourself and your dumb take.

@Daligou9 The truth is painful.

@HeerJeet Mangione studied computer science, not Engineering

@HeerJeet My understanding is that it's one of the first things they screen for, in anti-extremism contexts. Eleven of the 9/11 hijackers had engineering degrees. Huge college workload, social maladjustment, heavily male classes, the training to see everything as a problem to be solved...

@HeerJeet Software engineering specifically. I don’t think this applies much to structural, mechanical, aeronautic, etc. It’s a new thing, and it has everything to do with “engineering” in the symbolic order (language, logic, propositional content).

@HeerJeet I've worked in a number of govt sponsored research institutions and it's always surprised me the number of higher level engineers who would vote against their best interests by voting for candidates who go on to cut budgets and then their research department gets closed lol.

@HeerJeet It’s because they’re inculcated in an academic discipline with a lot of “right answers” and thus begin to think that all of their thoughts and preferences are blessed with a sort of objectivity that renders them Ubermenschen or “Elite Human Capital” or whatever…

@HeerJeet Yeah, I've worked in IT Engineering for over a decade, and it feels like libertarianism is the dominant political ideology with those elements mixed in.

@HeerJeet Yeah, it's often a route for upward mobility but tends to attract both petit bourgeois and those disinterested in the liberal arts.

@HeerJeet The Dark Jeet rises.

@HeerJeet Lots of this going on.

@HeerJeet Anyone who has read a Heinlein book could have seen you were right tbh

@HeerJeet If every engineer on earth lost their engineering powers the human population on earth would collapse to like a few hundred million in a few months.

@HeerJeet Watching the Silicon Valley bros it certainly seems true.

@HeerJeet Quite possibly one of the dumbest tweets I’ve read. Engineering at its core is problem solving. It certainly isn’t binary, many ways to solve a problem. The first caveman to build his own shelter rather than a natural cave, engineered something

@HeerJeet Software engineers don’t study engineering and aren’t actual engineers

@HeerJeet The humanities being a well known hotbed of moderation.

@HeerJeet Engineering was the source of a lot of proponents of creationism, intelligent design, and global warming denial

@HeerJeet If you think engineering is bad, look at the nutcases that MMA and pro wrestling produces.

@HeerJeet It’s true. I was married to an engineer who lost her mind. My father is a neocon and an engineer

@HeerJeet Known as the Salem Hypothesis, at least when referencing evolution/creationism.

@HeerJeet Belief in your own rationalism is a fantastic gateway drug to conspirative thinking.

@HeerJeet Me as someone who just graduated with a Computer Science degree: 😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬

@HeerJeet You mean SOFTWARE engineering sir, mechanical engineering we don't really practice anymore

@HeerJeet hoover?

@HeerJeet Wasn’t there once a study done, and engineering was the second most overrepresented major among college educated ISIS members? Second only to…. Islamic theology

@HeerJeet Is true

@HeerJeet A surprising number of mathematical cranks are engineers too, and I've heard it conjectured that one reason for this is that they fundamentally don't get the idea that something can be provably impossible, because in engineering there are only problems not *yet* solved.

@HeerJeet @anylaurie16 Hey, someone’s gotta drive those trains.

@HeerJeet Engineers bug you today and after a certain amount of time they turn out to be the quality right in front of you. Don't dismiss.

@HeerJeet Does this theory take state-backed extremism into account? Someone like Sec “500k dead kids are worth it” Albright?

@HeerJeet There are radicals in every field, SV techbros get more attention because they actually impact the economy. Conspiracists in most of social science have even worse views.

@HeerJeet Highly doubt it. Any data to back it up?

@HeerJeet My dad was an engineer: smart man; some weird thoughts
