At 22, a mysterious illness destroyed his ability to speak. The treatment wiped out his short-term memory. He built a "second brain" just to survive... And now millions use his system to 10x their productivity. Try it out for yourself (you won't regret it). đ§ľ
In 2007, Tiago Forte was just your normal 22-year-old. He worked at the Apple store part-time while going to college. But one day he started feeling a weird pain in his neck. He thought nothing of it... Until it got way worse:
Within weeks, he could barely speak. He went to a dozen different doctors over the next few months... And none of them had a clue what was wrong. They gave him a medication that "turned off" his nervous system. But that created a new problem:
Forte's short-term memory was destroyed. For the next couple of years, he couldn't remember: ⢠Trips that he took ⢠Conversations that he had ⢠Classes that he took This deep sense of loss changed something in him:
He realized memory is everything. Who are you without your memories? This question drove Forte to take a radical approach to his treatment...
He had his doctors give him every document in his file. Using his parents' computer, he digitized everything. This allowed him to draw connections he wouldn't be able to see otherwise. He didn't know it then, but it was the birth of his Second Brain system.
This was the prototype for the CODE framework that is central to building a second brain: ⢠Capture the most important information ⢠Organize for actionability ⢠Distill down to the essence ⢠Express your unique ideas and experiences Let's look at each in more detail:
The first step in building a Second Brain is capturing valuable ideas & insights. But most people do it haphazardlyâsaving notes in scattered places & never revisiting them. The key? Store everything in one central place (Notion, Evernote, Obsidian, etc.) for easy access.
To capture effectively: 1. Think like a curator - be selective. 2. Escape the reactivity loop - save now, consume later. 3. Keep what resonates - not just what seems useful. 4. Use the right tools - read-later apps, web clippers, & note-taking apps make it effortless.
Organizing your Second Brain shouldnât be rigidâit should be actionable. Instead of obsessing over folders, use the PARA method: ⢠Projects (Short-term efforts) ⢠Areas (Long-term responsibilities) ⢠Resources (Useful topics) ⢠Archive (Inactive items)
Just move old files to an âArchiveâ folder & start fresh. When organizing new info, ask: ⢠Is this useful for a project? ⢠If not, does it fit an area? ⢠If not, is it a resource? ⢠If none? archive or delete
Distilling is the process of making information useful. Instead of using long notes, summarize key takeaways. Use progressive summarization: The idea is to summarize an excerpt 3 times, getting more specific each time you revisit it. Each layer makes recall & action easier.
Make notes for your future self: ⢠Define key terms ⢠Add links to related content ⢠Leave placeholders for easy pickup Every time you revisit a note, refine it a little. Over time, the most valuable insights will rise to the top.
The final step is to express your unique ideas and experiences. Stop passively consuming & start turning your insights into action. Writing, videos, designsâwhatever your craft, your notes give you a head start. Build, share, & refine as you go.
Break big projects into intermediate packets, which are small, reusable pieces of work. Each work session, finish just one. The best part about building a second brain?
AI has made them incredibly powerful. My co-founder turned his second brain into a custom GPT that the team can use to answer questions. It's freed up 50% of his time, which is huge for an executive.
You can build an AI-powered second brain for your business. New hires can get up to speed way faster. It frees up senior employees from having to answer questions. Interested in learning more?
