Tolkien’s first prose translation and one of the earliest inspirations for his universe was the Kullervo cycle of the Finnish Kalevala, a story about a magical hero who swears revenge against his uncle for killing his father (cf Amleth/Hamlet) and commits suicide after killing his uncle and then discovering his having been in an incestuous relationship with his sister (cf Sigmund). His retelling of Kullervo was the direct inspiration for Túrin Turambar and his father Húrin (cf Sigurd), his sister Niënor (cf Signy), and even Huan the wolfhound (cf Musti).
