Nikesh Arora makes $288M/year in salary. More than Tim Cook, Sundar Pichai and Satya Nadella. He turned Palo Alto Networks from $19B to $120B in 5 years. Previously built Google’s Europe Business ($8B) and Softbank. The highest paid CEO you’ve never heard of: 🧵
5 years ago a Palo Alto Networks hired Nikesh Arora to become CEO without any prior cybersecurity experience. Since then, he's delivered: • 3X revenue increase to $8.4B • 15 strategic acquisitions • Market cap surge from $19B to $120B
This would be an impressive feat in any industry. But cybersecurity? • The biggest technology market in the world • 2,200+ cyberattacks occur daily (1 every 39 seconds) • Average data breach costs companies $4.45M
Born in India to a disciplined Air Force family, structure and high expectations shaped his early life. This military upbringing would later shape his leadership style: • Analytical • Direct • Laser-focused on results
In 1989, Nikesh arrived in America with just a few hundred dollars to his name. He took a massive risk that would define his career approach. While most talented Indians were playing it safe, he gambled everything on the American dream.
Starting his career with Fidelity Investments, by 2000, he rose to Vice President at Fidelity Technologies. Then he made his first entrepreneurial leap, founding T-Motion PLC. A pattern was emerging: learn, master, transform, repeat.
In 2004, he joined Google to lead European operations. He projected $4B in revenue within 5 years. Then delivered $8B instead. Google Europe's contribution to total revenue jumped from 25% to nearly 50%. His data-driven approach was revolutionizing everything he touched.
His most controversial Google move came when he eliminated commissions to agencies working with advertisers. Martin Sorrell, chief of advertising giant WPP, labeled Google a "frenemy" in response.
Arora's response? "I will not pay you to bring me my existing customers." The gamble paid off. He later said, "We never looked back." By 2013, he was Google's highest-paid executive ($58M).
But Nikesh wanted an even bigger challenge. In 2014, he surprised Silicon Valley by joining SoftBank as President and successor to Masayoshi Son. Son later announced he would remain CEO for another 5-10 years, leading Nikesh to leave.
It's 2018. Palo Alto Networks made what seemed like an irrational decision: hiring Nikesh Arora as CEO despite his complete lack of cybersecurity experience. Industry experts couldn't believe it. Neither could Nikesh. Watch what he said about this 👇🏽
In a technical field like cybersecurity, domain expertise is essential for leadership. But Nikesh had identified something most miss: certain leadership principles transcend industry specifics 👇🏽
His approach centered on three core elements: 1) Data-driven decision making Arora used data to drive product innovation, focusing on AI and automation in cybersecurity. Acquisitions like Expanse and Demisto addressed market needs for advanced threat detection.
2) Balanced competitive posture Instead of price wars, he prioritized innovation. His "platformization" strategy let Palo Alto offer a unified cybersecurity solution, simplifying operations and outpacing rivals with value over cost-cutting.
3) Cross-industry adaptability Arora leveraged his Google and SoftBank experience to scale global business and diverse team. He focused on cloud security and AI (industries adjacent to his prior expertise) at Palo Alto while using domain experts to guide strategic growth.
These principles proved more valuable than any technical expertise could have been. Under his leadership, Palo Alto Networks shifted from traditional network security to: • Becoming a comprehensive cybersecurity • Platform integrating AI, cloud security & threat prevention.
The Nikesh Arora playbook proves that sometimes the best person to revolutionize an industry is someone who hasn't been shaped by its limitations. As cybersecurity evolves, Arora's data-driven, cross-industry approach may be just what the sector needs.

@shravvmehtaa Great profile and Nikesh is a rockstar. However, like most highly paid CEOs, he doesn’t make $288M/year in salary. All of the numbers are public. He is highly compensated because he has created value for shareholders, and he has equity alongside them. Important distinction…
@jrichlive Totally fair point!
@shravvmehtaa Didn’t realize this was the same guy from Google - wild

@shravvmehtaa Impressive track record and results!
@shravvmehtaa I chatted with him once while waiting for coffee near Stanford. He’s a very down to earth guy, I asked him product questions and he gave excellent surgical answers. He said “worry less about building products and more about GTM and customers and you’ll be just fine.”
@shravvmehtaa his salary is actually $1m, the rest is stock
@shravvmehtaa interesting didn’t know he is the highest paid. Have known about him since my college days because he is alumni of my college @IITBHU_Varanasi and when i was in college, he was an inspirational for many students. very humble and kind man!

@shravvmehtaa This is awesome. I’ve been reading The Money Trap by Alok Sama (Nikesh’s close friend and former SoftBank CFO) and Nikesh’s influence and aura is unbelievable. He sounds like he’s just an incredibly sharp and seasoned operator, who’s truly 1 of 1 in the valley.
@shravvmehtaa This guy’s making moves behind the scenes. He turned Palo Alto into a $120B powerhouse, and his pay reflects that success.
