For years I've been curious about Dostoevsky's "anti-Semitism" but it's been difficult to find clear information about it. Finally, I tracked down his essay "On the Jewish Question". To spare you similar travails, I will repost the pages here. 🧵
JQ aficionados will certainly chuckle at some of what we might call Semitic tropes that Dostoevsky discusses in the essay. He notes, for example, the extraordinary prickliness of Jews in response to even the slightest criticism. 🧵
This is Boris Brasol's translation of the work Diary of a Writer, March 1877 issue. Diary of a Writer seems to have been a kind of proto-blog Dostoevsky had going, in which he would publish his thoughts and some of his fiction in a monthly journal for subscribers.
I will post my thoughts about the substantive content of the essay later. For now I just wanted to get it out there since it took me so long to track it down. End of 🧵
