It occurs to me that the actual reason the US Army needed 76mm M4s in France in 1944 wasn't because of "muh Tigers" - 75mm tanks had faced those rare beasts before with little real trouble - but because the Nazis had a huge number of Panthers in France, far more than anticipated.
As an aside, the trick that Allied intelligence pulled off to very accurately estimate Panther production numbers from the serial number range found in parts taken from destroyed examples (including road wheels!) stands out as one of the smart-guy feats of the war.
