🇷🇴‼️Upheaval in Romania: The original decision to annul the election in which he defeated Georgescu was overturned‼️ April 25, 2025 An unexpected twist on the Romanian political scene - the Court of Appeal in Ploesti temporarily suspended the decision of the Constitutional Court, which declared the December 2024 presidential elections completely invalid. 👇
This opens the possibility that the election process will continue where it left off - in the second round, between Călin Georgescu and Elena Lasconi. The news spread through the Romanian media like lightning, because the court's move effectively "turns off" the effect of the December 6 decision, which was previously justified by allegations of irregularities and influence from outside - especially from Russia. However, to date, no concrete evidence has been presented for those accusations, which has caused numerous controversies in political and legal circles. 👇
According to information provided by local sources, the identity of the person or institution that initiated the request to overturn the decision of the Constitutional Court remains unknown. This further fueled speculation - both among analysts and the public - that a second round of elections could now take place, in line with the December results. Let's recall that in the first round independent candidate Călin Georgescu received the most votes, which caused stormy reactions from certain centers of power in Romania and abroad. 👇
His popularity and rhetoric, which often goes beyond the framework of established political narratives, were clearly not to the liking of certain actors. Meanwhile, new presidential elections had already been scheduled for May 4, in which Georgescu could not participate due to the proceedings against him on charges of alleged violations of the constitution and irregularities related to campaign financing. That legal process is still ongoing, but the latest court decision could change the course of things. 👇
The candidate in these scheduled elections, the right-wing George Simion, who has already entered the second plan of the campaign, immediately reacted: "The decision means the return of the second round!". He emphasized that he supports returning to the path of democracy, legality and constitutional order. On the other hand, Victor Ponta, the former prime minister and one of the most politically experienced actors, was more cautious in his comments. However, he emphasized that he repeatedly pointed out that the annulment of the December elections did not have a solid basis. 👇
"If the Ministry of Justice decides to proceed with the second round, that would be a reasonable political solution," Ponta said, leaving the door open for a compromise way out of the crisis. What complicates matters is that the decision of the Court of Appeal is not yet final. There is a deadline of five days for a possible appeal, but until then - the execution of the decision of the Constitutional Court is suspended. In practice, this means that previous election decisions are "unfrozen", at least temporarily. 👇
In this whole situation, the question remains - is Romania rushing into even deeper legal and political uncertainty, or is this decision a step towards the return of transparency and continuity of the electoral process? In any case, the next few days will be crucial - both for Călin Georgescu and for Elena Lasconi, but also for the citizens who have not known for months who will eventually get the presidential chair.
