gojo refers to his students as “his kids”, so they decide to get him a card for father’s day. it’s mostly just a joke, they overheard him say it to nanami one time and thought it would be funny, but deep down, there kinda is some sincerity to it, too.
“its not like any of us have dads anyway”, nobara shrugs when she pitches the idea. yuji laughs and agrees straight away, but it takes some time to convince megumi. “the card has to look really stupid though” is his one condition. “so he gets that its a joke.”
so they channel their inner children (a first for megumi) and get to work. nobara provides the glitter, yuji has the honour to craft the heart shaped card (he did the shittiest job in the trial round), and megumi gets to write the message since his handwriting is the messiest.
in true first grader fashion he even slips in a couple spelling mistakes; neither yuji nor nobara notice (and he has to hide his smile behind the collar of his jacket to not raise any suspicions).
the card is an absolute masterpiece - the world’s most crooked heart made of neon pink cardboard, completely covered in silver glitter (legend has it that students still find glitter in the communal kitchen years after yuji, nobara and megumi have graduated)
and a simple text written in silver glitter ink, slightly off-centre and a little smudged: “hapy father’s day, gojo-sensei!!!”
- they would have forgotten if it weren’t for yuji, who jumps up from his seat in the middle of science class and whisper-yells “THE CARD!” when father’s day finally rolls around.
nobara and yuji rush to their dorms to grab it, dragging megumi around with them, who has since sobered up from his drunken state (it’s the only way he can explain how they managed to convince him after all, according to him) and really, really doesn’t wanna participate.
but it is too late to chicken out now, yuji says, and nobara still finds glitter in her hair so they have to do it, she adds, and megumi sighs in defiance when they finally arrive at gojo’s office.
yuji already raises his hand, ready to knock on the wooden door, when a familiar voice behind them stops him in his tracks. “oh, are you guys looking for me?”
nobara scrambles to hide the card behind her back as they all turn around to face him, which earns them a wide grin from their teacher. she tries to not so subtly shove it towards megumi, who refuses to take it, and silver glitter falls on the ground.
this is when they notice the trail of glitter they left behind on their way. starting at their dorms, all the way across campus, through the hallway, by their classroom door and finally, in front of gojo’s office. he laughs as he notices them looking at the pile at their feet.
“i was just following the trail, you know?” megumi considers disappearing into his shadow for a second, and even nobara and yuji finally become painfully aware of how embarrassing this whole thing actually is. a father’s day card? for their teacher?
but nobara is not a quitter, and they spent way too much time on that stupid card, so she hands it over with both hands, eyes squeezed shut. “this is for you, sensei. from all of us.”
gojo takes in the moment for another second - three teenagers, faces beet red, who refuse to look at him - and considers taking a photo before his eyes finally land on whatever nobara is holding.he finally takes the card and more glitter falls to the floor.
megumi is the first one to look up at him when the mocking laughter he expects doesn’t come, and he could swear gojo’s face cracks for a second when he watches him open the card and read the words. when yuji and nobara dare to open their eyes, the laughter begins.
“you guuys!”, gojo wails and ruffles their hair, one by one, before he pulls them all in for a group hug. nobara mumbles something under her breath to demonstrate her annoyance, megumi tries to move away and yuji laughs awkwardly, shaking his head like a dog to remove the glitter
gojo dramatically wipes away a tear that’s not there (and even if there was one, he’s wearing his blindfold, anyway) and throws his hands up, glitter flying everywhere. “papa loves you too!”
this is megumi’s queue to walk away. nobara rolls her eyes all the way back into her head, grabs yuji by his hood and drags him along, following her classmate. “alright. joke’s over”, she says as the three continue walking.
“this was great!”, gojo yells, swinging the card around again, causing another glitter rain, “same time next year?”. in response, nobara huffs and megumi waves dismissively as they turn the corner.
gojo’s wide grin turns into a genuine smile as he looks down at the card again “happy father’s day, gojo-sensei”, he whispers and lets out a little chuckle. he opens the door to his office and walks over to his desk, leaving a new trail of glitter behind.
he looks at it for another moment and reads it once again before he places it on his desk, front and centre, where others would put a photo of themselves and their partner, perhaps, or… yeah. a picture of their children.
@lesundone I imagine that after the end of the manga, Megumi is just looking through some boxes after graduating jujutsu tech and suddenly finds the card. It's beaten up and still so ugly, but Megumi suddenly realizes that even if he wasn't a good dad, he was much more than just a teacher
@Salty_Arttss it takes weeks for megumi to find the courage to go near gojo’s office, let alone enter it. but when he eventually does, he finds everything looking the exact same way it always has (with the addition of a layer of dust) - obnoxious glitter card on the desk included.
