Switzerland, one of the world’s most Bitcoin-friendly countries, hasn’t made #Bitcoin legal tender like El Salvador. Instead, it’s crafting its own path. Here's why Bitcoin could be key to Switzerland’s future economic stability and energy transformation. A thread. 🧵👇
/ With a stable economy, low inflation (1.2%), and a AAA credit rating, Switzerland is one of the world’s most financially secure nations. Also, over 1.6 million Swiss people hold #Bitcoin or other crypto, showing how deep adoption has already penetrated.
/ The canton of Zug, known as “Crypto Valley,” has been leading the charge since 2013. It's home to countless blockchain startups, but in 2022 Lugano's Plan ₿ initiative launched, aiming to make the city a #Bitcoin hub with 260+ merchants accepting BTC.
/ Despite this, Switzerland has yet to embrace #Bitcoin as legal tender. A Bitcoin Initiative was proposed in December 2024, and it could push for including Bitcoin in Swiss National Bank (SNB) reserves. It requires 100,000 signatures by June 2026 for a referendum.
/ #Bitcoin is already tax-favored in Switzerland. No capital gains tax for private individuals and no VAT on transactions since 2018. Switzerland still needs to figure out how to fully integrate Bitcoin into its financial system. Could a Bitcoin standard be the answer?
/ No major political party directly promotes #Bitcoin, but libertarian groups like MASS-VOLL! and individuals like @samuelkullmann lead adoption initiatives. The Bern Grand Council approved a Bitcoin mining study to explore using hydroelectric energy for grid stabilization.
/ Switzerland’s energy mix is predominantly renewable, with 60% from hydroelectric. This creates a unique opportunity for #Bitcoin mining using surplus green energy, especially during winter months when power production exceeds demand. A perfect setup for sustainable mining.
/ With 15,000 MW of energy capacity (60% from hydro), Switzerland has the potential to scale sustainable #Bitcoin mining. It can do this by surplus renewable power that could help stabilize the grid while unlocking new revenue streams for the country.
/ The Swiss National Bank (SNB) is cautious, noting #Bitcoin’s volatility, but the private sector is already moving forward. If the Bitcoin Initiative succeeds, Switzerland could become a global hub for Bitcoin adoption while using its green energy to power a Bitcoin economy.
/ In 30 years, Switzerland could be a model of sustainable #Bitcoin mining. With Bitcoin in its reserves, it will bolster financial sovereignty, green energy solutions, and economic stability. This is a perfect example of how Bitcoin-friendly policies could pay off long-term.
