According to the President of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen, "Energy is vital" to the EU-UK cooperation and the North Sea is considered a "powerhouse" for "clean energy and the energy of the future." -Offshore wind -Marine energy -Hydrogen -Carbon capture and storage
are the preferred energy choices for the🇪🇺EU, trying to coordinate the cooperation among its members. The🇬🇧UK PM Starmer said the government is "doing more with the EU to improve our interconnections and make the most of our energy systems," quoting the energy cooperation with
🇳🇱Netherlands 🇳🇴Norway 🇩🇪Germany as leading examples to be followed. According to Starmer, the UK has export opportunities to unlock in "wind, nuclear, hydrogen, carbon capture, heat pumps and so much more" and could add up to the "£43 billion of private investment" received by
the UK since last July, when the Labour government replaced the Conservative party after more than a decade of undisputed leadership of UK politics. The comments were made during the "Summit on Future of Energy Security" held in London at the end of last April 24 and they were
meant to signal political support to a series of projects to bolster interconnections between the EU littoral states of the North Sea and UK. Just a day before the Summit, a feasibility study commissioned by the🇩🇪German and🇬🇧British government about the possibility to
create a flourishing hydrogen trade between the two nations was published. According to the same study authored by Arup, Adelphi, dena, "there is an opportunity to realise pipeline-based hydrogen trade between the two countries. This could either be through a
pipeline directly between British and German landfall, connected into an offshore hydrogen network or via connections to the🇳🇱Netherlands or🇧🇪Belgium." From these two countries, hydrogen would then be transported to Germany through the much-discussed European hydrogen backbone.
Interconnections and interdependencies are again key for the future of the EU-UK energy security. The UK could, in theory, supply much of the 10 MT/year of green hydrogen needs the EU is planning for 2030. Yet, the study fails to provide a range of costs for the projects and
explicitly states that power and electricity costs for H2 production in the UK are comparatively higher than in other EU countries such as🇪🇸Spain, eyeing green hydrogen exports too but now grappling with the consequence of the blackout, and🇸🇦Saudi Arabia, a major O&G producer.
