In 2021, Charles Hoskinson unilaterally used his genesis keys to REWRITE the Cardano ledger and take control of ₳318m ($619m) By comparison, when the DAO hack happened in 2016, the Ethereum community forked over $60m. One of the largest ledger reorgs in blockchain history: 🧵
You know the first rule of crypto: "Not your keys, not your crypto." 🔑 So how could ₳318M, held directly on the Cardano ledger in various presale (ICO) UTxOs, be moved without the owners' consent? It was a two-step maneuver. Let's break it down.
STEP 1: The "Magic" Hard Fork 🎩🐇 In 2021, the Cardano "Allegra" Hard Fork (HF) wasn't just a routine upgrade. It contained an extra payload. This HF effectively ERASED the original ICO UTxOs holding the ₳318M and swept the funds into the Cardano reserves.
Here’s the proof: 1️⃣ The Hard Fork transaction, triggering a Protocol Update. Crucially, this required signatures from the Cardano genesis keys, which Charles Hoskinson/IOG controlled at the time. https://cardanoscan.io/transac... 2️⃣ The code commit: https://github.com/IntersectMB...
Key bit is in the function returnRedeemAddrsToReserves: - Filter UTxOs into 'redeemer' (ICO) and 'non-redeemer' - ADD balances of 'redeemer' (ICO) UTxOs to reserves - Set the NEW UTxO set to contain ONLY 'non-redeemer' UTxOs POOF, ICO funds are gone from their original owners!
Line 55 is where the HF calls this function, basically saying the new epoch state is just like the old epoch state, except for this one little 'returnRedeemAddrsToReserves' thing. Step 1 complete! ₳318m from presale addresses moved to reserves his keys control!
STEP 2: The "MIRacle" Withdrawal 💰 Enter "MIR" (Move Instantaneous Rewards) transactions. These allow moving funds from reserves, typically for staking rewards or treasury purposes. This MIR transaction moved the ~₳318m: https://cardanoscan.io/transac...
Now, Charles Hoskinson made some claims yesterday (May 6th, 2025): 1️⃣ The "vast majority" of this ₳318M was eventually claimed by original ICO buyers. 2️⃣ The rest was used to fund IntersectMBO. Let's examine these claims. 👇
Problem with claim 1: The IOG team tasked with finding these ICO buyers (who hadn't surfaced in 4 YEARS) reportedly had VERY little success. Unsurprising, but where's the detailed accounting for these "claimed" funds? 🧾
Problem with claim 2: Yesterday, @JBriggsLondon, interim ED of Intersect, stated Intersect was seeded with ~$7M USD. That's a FAR CRY from the remaining balance of ₳318M (~$696m at time of withdrawal) Plus, it's been said Intersect was JOINTLY funded by Emurgo and IOG. So
So, if: Most funds weren't successfully returned to original ICO holders... Only a tiny fraction went to Intersect... Where did the VAST majority of that ₳318 MILLION actually go after being moved from reserves? Separately, the funds were staked, earning 25m additional ₳!
If I were "temporarily holding" ₳318M of community funds, I'd ensure every single ₳'s path was meticulously documented and transparent. From reserves, to me (if necessary), to the final recipient. No such detailed, verifiable path has been provided for this ₳318M. Silence.
Ironically, Charles recently emphasized needing community input for scaling solutions, citing the importance of governance. Yet, when ₳318M was at stake, he acted unilaterally via genesis keys to alter the ledger and control these funds. Interesting.
Let's not forget the origin: This ₳ was initially sold by Attain Corp, an entity reportedly set up before Emurgo's incorporation to limit liability. Charles recently claimed the "statute of limitations" (😂) expired after 7 years, so no further obligation existed.
These are not funds allocated at genesis. This was ADA that was sold (mostly to senior citizens in Japan, who often complained they were mislead/scammed) to individuals. Charles had no mandate to decide what to do with the funds and violated the most basic tenets of crypto.
If Charles wants to claim any legitimacy to his actions, he needs to produce: 1. Original sales contracts supporting his claim the funds could be moved if not claimed in time 2. Show the trail of funds supporting his claim of donating to Intersect.
Hope you enjoyed exploring one of the greatest unknown heists in crypto history. Bravo to Charles for pulling it off.
