@Enterprise @enterprisecares An extremely threatening letter and $43,000 in sought damages. Robbery, miscommunication, and many many attempts at trying and be helpful apparently get you here. 1/17 🧵

Backstory: I rented a vehicle for a trip up to Canada last September. I wound up working with Enterprise because they were local, and also I had good experiences working with them before. Big mistake. 2/17 🧵

I bought the rental through @priceline and the most affordable option was a dealer's choice. I get there and the vehicle they set me up with was a 4Runner, not great for a trip alone covering ground, but I decide not to complain as I'm not sure if it will void my rental. 3/17 🧵

I also purchased rental insurance through @priceline as they had previously worked with Allianz, and I never had an issues with them. I failed to notice they had switched providers/enshittified to the much more generic-sounding http://RentalCover.com 4/17 🧵

I get the rental and travel up to Canada. Everything goes as smoothly as possible until I get to Montréal. My rental vehicle, the 4Runner, is broken into and stolen overnight. 5/17 🧵

I make the calls to report it stolen. I call @Enterprise @enterprisecares to arrange a replacement vehicle but they aren't helpful. I try to start the claim with http://RentalCover.com but their site is so broken/useless I can't file the claim until the trip is over. 6/17 🧵

But my trip IS over. I have no place to stay for the night and no vehicle. My phone is running low on charge so I make the decision to book a flight and try to resolve things once I am back at home. 7/17 🧵

Once back at home, I return the keys to the local @Enterprise agent, and ask if there is anything I can do to start the claim. I call them 4 times over the next week to get an update or see who I need to reach out to, eventually I am told "it's just being written off." 8/17 🧵

That wasn't true however. In December, I get word of a claim filed against my personal insurance(liability only.) This was done w/o my permission and damages my insurance history. In spite of this, I alert them I had rental insurance and offer to start the claim for them. 9/17 🧵

I file the claim with http://RentalCover.com, they take forever to process it and eventually in January alert me that they would need the police report to complete the claim. 10/17 🧵

This is the really infuriating part. @SPVM is a TOTAL INFORMATIONAL BLACK HOLE and could resolve this very quickly. Filed a fax request Jan 21st. I've tried to reach out to them several times since by phone, fax, and email, in English and French. I've heard nothing back. 11/17 🧵

I don't know to what extent this is a measure of overworked employees at @SPVM, or if some level of enmity in US/Canada geopolitics that is spilling over to me as a tourist from last year, or what. All I can tell you is I resent the request most recently on April 26th. 12/17 🧵

@Enterprise @enterprisecares is now insisting the entire cost of the vehicle is my personal responsibility. $43,557.28 for a Toyota 4Runner that I drove for 4 days. They're insisting the claim needs to be closed in the next 10 days or it will be sent to collections. 13/17 🧵

Remember, this is the same group who originally told me that the vehicle was 'written off.' I also offered to start the claim immediately, which all of this time-sensitive pressure feels hollow and deeply antagonistic towards me, the victim of the crime. 14/17 🧵

I don't know how this ends, but I've tried at every juncture to be transparent, patient, and above the boards in what has been an immensely disstressing ordeal. Not the kind of guy who airs his dirty laundry. I'm only doing this now because I see no other choice. 15/17 🧵

Consider how you'd feel if you went on vacation only to have a vehicle stolen. You pay to get home, assume everything is covered no harm, no foul (the way things are supposed to work) and then, months later you are being fiscally threatened with $43k in damages. 16/17 🧵

I want to believe that @Enterprise @enterprisecares, @SPVM, and @priceline /their partners can make this right, but my faith in this sorting itself out is quite low. Modern society operates on a principle of trust and multiple failures of that trust have brought us here. 17/17 🧵
