@adamhpking @LukeSGittos1986 The appeal is about the severity of the sentence, not the charge itself. 31 months is more than many of those actually involved in the disorder received – for an intemperate tweet that was swiftly deleted. In 2013, four members of a Telford grooming gang received just 30 months.

We have adjourned for lunch, back at 2:05. The issue so far has been what level of culpability Lucy pleaded guilty to. She did not intend to incite serious violence, she says. Indeed, we've heard that in the days after she deleted her tweet, she posted several others telling

During Crown cross-examination of Lucy. Does she have strong views on immigration? Yes. Does she think children are unsafe because of illegal migration? Yes. Does she feel threatened by immigrants? No. Does she hold a hatred of migrants? 'I don't hate migrants'.

Lucy's original solicitor, Liam Muir, has been on the stand for about half an hour, being cross-examined by Adam King about what he advised Connolly and when.

Quite an unusual situation for Mr Muir to be in, including for the appeal to have been allowed in the first place (pleas are generally taken as read). No junior solicitor wants to be giving legal evidence to the Court of Appeal about his own conduct.

Adam King now summing up. Key question here is whether she intended to incite violence, he says. The fact that she said 'for all I care', that she deleted the tweet, and that 2 days later she was tweeting telling people to stop rioting, all says not.

The Crown, summing up. "The post was a continuing reflection of her racist mindset." Other posts demonstrated her "racist views". She "clearly intended" to stir up racial hatred and serious violence.
