In 1929, people in Chicago were mysteriously dying. Authorities eventually found the killer: Their fridges. Back then, fridges used methyl chloride, a toxic gas that could leak and kill without warning.

Chemical company DuPont set out to invent a safer refrigerant. Instead, one of their scientists, Dr. Roy J. Plunkett accidentally discovered a “magic powder” that resisted heat, acid, water, and almost everything else.

It was a lab accident that became a billion-dollar empire. The name? TEFLON.

Teflon was a game-changer. It was in the Manhattan Project, it could handle radioactive gas and extreme chemicals. After WWII, it went commercial and spread like absolute wildfire.

Teflon was everywhere: ✅Non-stick pans ✅Waterproof clothes ✅Stain-proof carpets It was even in medical implants.

To make Teflon, DuPont used another chemical: C8. It helped manufacture and coat products. But C8 didn’t break down. It built up in blood. And it spread everywhere. It was in the air, water, food and human cells!

In the 1990s, a farmer named Earl Tennant noticed his cows were dying. He discovered tumors, black teeth, and hairless hooves. The water flowing into his farm was foaming. And guess where it flowed from? That's right. From a DuPont landfill.

So Tennant hired a lawyer. Rob Bilott (below). Neither of them had any idea how deep this went. They thought maybe it was an accident, a one time thing. Wrong!

A documentary called The Devil We Know (2018), and subsequently a movie starring Mark Ruffalo called Dark Waters (2019) were released regarding this very topic and legal saga.

In 2005, after years of lawsuits, a scientific panel confirmed the link between C8 and a raft of diseases such as: – Thyroid disease – Testicular and kidney cancer – Ulcerative colitis...and more!

By 2017, DuPont had paid out $600M in settlements. Then they pulled a trick: They spun off their Teflon business into a new company—Chemours—and kept going. Same formula. Slightly tweaked chemical. Same deadly risks.

That tweak was called GenX. It replaced C8 and was supposed to be safer. But new studies showed GenX caused the same cancers. And worse: it’s even more mobile, spreading contamination faster and further.

Today, the class of chemicals used in Teflon are known as PFAS: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. You know them as: Forever Chemicals. Because they don’t break down. They just build up. In rivers. In food. In blood. Everywhere.

PFAS have been found in everything from rainwater, to breastmilk, soil and even polar bears! 98% of human blood samples taken have PFAS in them. All life on Earth is contaminated.

What makes PFAS so dangerous? They mimic fatty acids in our body, hitching a ride in our bloodstream and embedding in organs. And there’s no easy way to remove them.

DuPont’s “miracle” made them billions. But it came at a cost that can’t be measured in dollars. Almost a century of global poisoning later and it’s still happening.

How do you protect yourself and your loved ones? Stay away from: Nonstick cookware, stain-resistant furniture & carpets, waterproof clothing, and food packaging like popcorn bags, pizza boxes and disposable plates.
