The Italian and Greek grid operators Terna and IPTO signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the construction of the The GRI.TA 2 project, running from the Italian Southern city of Galatina to the Western Greek city of Tesprozia, in the Epirus region and close to the border with

🇦🇱Albania, recently hosting an important meeting of the European Political Community. The entire region is betting on growing investments in renewables and low-carbon energy solutions, but also more interconnections, to lower energy costs and limit the use of fossil fuels.

According to Terna and IPTO, the new interconnection will: - Integrate more efficiently the energy production of renewable sources, reducing costs for operating plants - Increase the competitiveness of the electricity markets and reduce costs for consumers The GRITA2 project,

a €1.9 billion investment which will strengthen the interconnection between the energy systems of two Mediterranean countries richly endowed with abundant solar irradiation capacity, will effectively triple the existing interconnection capacity between Italy and Greece, with an

undersea power cable in operation since 2002. GRITA 2 will be over 300km, with an undersea section of 240 km on the bottom of the Ionian Sea. The project should be finalised by 2030 and should gain access to🇪🇺EU funds for boosting interconnectivity. Is this project strengthening
