Nirav Modi wasn’t just rich. He was fashion-world royalty. • Opened boutiques in NYC, London, Hong Kong • Featured in Christie’s & Sotheby’s • Red carpet clients All built on fraud.

He made his big debut at Hong Kong with the Rolls Royce of diamonds The Golconda Diamond Sold for $3M+ This move made him a luxury brand

Here’s how the scam worked: • Used fake Letters of Undertaking (LoUs) from Punjab National Bank • Got overseas credit—without collateral • Colluded with PNB staff to bypass banking systems • Racked up 1,213 fake LoUs over 7 years Total damage: ₹14,000 crore (~$2.8B)

What are LoUs, anyway? They’re bank guarantees for loans abroad. Banks are supposed to back them with actual money. Modi’s team got them without any backing—and no one noticed for years.

Where the money went: • Fake diamond imports • Shell companies in Hong Kong & UAE • Lavish lifestyle: yachts, luxury hotels, art, jets • PR blitz to look legit It was all smoke and sparkle.

The insiders helped make it happen: • Two PNB staff issued the fake LoUs • They skipped the core banking system • Used the SWIFT network, untraceable by normal audits System exploit 101.

When the fraud surfaced in 2018: • Modi fled India • CBI & ED launched probes • Assets worth $1B seized (properties, art, jewelry) • Massive public backlash rocked India’s banking sector

He was finally arrested in London (2019): • Found living above a $2M jewelry store • Denied bail 8 times • Still fighting extradition to India He’s now in a UK jail—awaiting fate.

The fallout: • PNB’s market value tanked • Triggered tighter banking regulations • India's biggest banking scam—ever It shook the financial system to its core.

From king of diamonds to global fugitive Nirav Modi lived like royalty. But it was all built on lies. And the house of cards? It finally collapsed.
