Trigger Warning: This thread documents harmful portrayals of #MECFS on TV. I don’t enjoy sharing these, but it’s important to record how the condition has been misunderstood, trivialised and stigmatised.
Note: The NICE guideline states that professionals should recognise that people with #MECFS “may have experienced prejudice and disbelief and could feel stigmatised by people… who do not understand their illness.” More info: https://meassociation.org.uk/w...
The Simpsons (1999): S11E03 - an editor refers to “articles about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome” as part of the “chick crap” section, grouping it with astrology and romantic fiction. #MECFS
King of the Hill (1998): S2E20 — Hank says everyone’s trying to get in on the Americans with Disabilities Act. Says Debbie has the “yuppie flu” (a slur for #MECFS), and another character quips, “Anybody’s disabled if you think hard enough.”
House (2004): Pilot Episode - Dr House speaks with a patient who describes symptoms of tiredness. The patient suggests it might be #MECFS or #Fibromyalgia, he then gives the patient some sweets in a Vicodin bottle.
Benidorm (2007): S01E02 - A character confuses MS and ME, asking, “Which is the one where you can’t be arsed to do owt?” And then says, “ME, MS… it’s all lazy buggers cracking on there’s summat wrong with them.”
Criminal Minds (2014): S10E04 – the BAU hunts a suspect with delusional parasitosis—a false belief he’s infested with bugs. They hypothesise he seeks validating support, and search for groups for “controversial & debated diseases” such as fibromyalgia, #MECFS, Lyme.
Strike (2024): Two highlight clips —an ambulatory wheelchair user, is seen walking and is said to not need it when his family aren’t looking. Kea got #MECFS and is questioned for seeking advice from a fellow patient despite seeing “real” doctors. https://x.com/abrokenbattery/s...
