In 2018, Iceland's most wanted man escaped from prison and fled the country on the same plane as the Prime Minister. Meet Sindri Thor Stefansson. He masterminded the BIGGEST crypto heist in the history of Iceland and then pulled off a prison break. This story is WILD🧵

This is Iceland. 82% of its energy comes from geothermal and hydroelectric sources. Combine that with freezing temperatures and a very low crime rate and you understand why Bitcoin mining companies love it there. In late 2017, something unexpected happened.

Four mining companies got robbed. The mastermind? Sindri Thor Stefansson — a computer science graduate and criminal. This wasn't his first stint. He had been stealing since kindergarten.

By the time he was 20, he had about 200 cases to his name. After a 10-month stay in prison alongside his friend and accomplice, he decided to turn his life around. He got a job, went to school, and started a family. For a while, things went well.

Soon, his earnings weren't enough to provide for his family. Something had to be done and fast. He settled on Bitcoin mining. In 2017, he met someone over the internet. The conversation that ensued would come to make him Iceland's most wanted man.

That someone was Mr. X. Rather than buying mining computers, Mr. X advised Sindri to steal them instead. He proposed a partnership where he sets it up and Sindri earns 15% of the profits for life. Sindri agreed and immediately got to work.

He assembled a team of 5 and on the night of December 5, 2017, they struck their first Bitcoin farm. They broke into Algrim Consulting data center and stole 104 computers. 5 days later, they struck again. This time, they tried breaking into the Borealis Data center but failed.

Sindri and his team didn't let that one loss deter them. 5 days after, they found out there was a new mine in another part of the country and struck once again. This time, they made out with 28 brand new rigs.

What they didn't know was that there was a CCTV recording of them in a van after they fled the scene. The police saw this and then arrested them. But there was a problem.

Although, there was CCTV footage of them in a van fleeing, there wasn't any conclusive evidence of their involvement in the crime. So, the police released them. In January 2018, they decided to strike another data center again.

The name? Advania Data center. Luckily for them, the guard standing watch had diarrhoea and had to head home, when they arrived there. This time, Sindri and his team carted away with 550 computers.

It wasn't long before the police began their investigations. 2 weeks later, arrests began. 11 people, including Sindri, were charged. Now, this is where things began to get interesting.

While they waited for trial, Sindri escaped from Sogn Prison where he was kept, through the window. Then he took a taxi to Keflavik Airport where he boarded a flight to Sweden using a fake passport.

Coincidentally, the Prime Minister of Iceland was also on this flight. Immediately, the Iceland police noticed he was gone, they contacted Interpol who mobilized an international manhunt for him.

After arriving at Sweden, Sindri traveled to Denmark, Germany, and Amsterdam where he re-connected with 2 members of his team. One of them posted a group picture they took on IG and in no time, they were caught and extradited back to Iceland.

Then they underwent trial. Sindri received the harshest sentence of them all — 4½ years in prison. To this day, the stolen rigs — worth over $2 million — were never recovered.
