Naval Ravikant is the smartest man alive. He’s dropped 26K posts on 𝕏, each a truth bomb on wealth, happiness, and freedom. But ONE recent post revealed a blind spot, even he didn’t catch. And it pulled me into a rabbit hole that exposed a much bigger truth. 🧵
@naval said: "The currency of life isn’t money. It’s not even time. It’s attention.” It felt true. Attention is scarce. Precious. Fought over. But I couldn’t help asking… Is that the whole truth? Or just the beginning of it?
This thread will take you 3 minutes. If that already feels like too much, maybe that’s exactly the problem. We shape our lives with what we notice. But attention is more layered than it seems.
So what is attention, Really? It’s more than focus; it’s the way your being meets the world through the aperture of your consciousness. You become what you consistently return your attention to, because you are what you notice.
But here’s where it gets subtle: Attention is not neutral. It's either passive (controlled) or active (conscious). One makes you a product, the other makes you a person. This distinction is EVERYTHING and most people have never made it.
Now let’s trace the arc. Because attention didn’t always operate this way. It evolved. And that evolution shaped who we are. Welcome to the "Rabbit Hole." (we have 2 minutes left. Stay with me.)
In early life, attention served survival. You noticed what threatened or fed you: Predators. Fire. Faces. Pain. It was raw, fast, embodied. Your nervous system ran the show.
Later, in the age of identity, attention settled into roles: Father. Warrior. Priest. Farmer. What you noticed was what you were. Tradition shaped attention like a mold, repetition over curiosity.
With reason and empires, attention scaled. It turned outward, toward structure, order, conquest. Attention became the lens of maps, clocks, calendars. Suddenly, it wasn’t just what you saw. It was how you measured it.
Next came the industrial and media explosion. Attention was monetized. TV, ads, newspapers. All chasing your eyeballs. This was the birth of attention as commodity. It was no longer sacred, just profitable.
Then came the algorithm. The shift to data, metrics, and dopamine. Apps rewired brains. Feeds replaced thoughts. Attention became pure currency, tracked, sold, and weaponized. A battle for eyeballs, quantified.
But something is shifting. Again. A subtle revolt is happening. People are noticing their noticing. Attention is no longer just a target. It’s becoming a tool. A compass. A spiritual lever.
It starts with awareness. You notice the algorithm. You see the scroll. You feel the pull. And for the first time, you don’t respond. You hold your attention like breath. That’s the beginning of sovereignty.
The future isn’t about grabbing more attention. It’s about guiding it, not just from others, but from yourself. The game isn’t "who gets seen". It’s "who sees clearly".
So was Naval wrong? Not at all. He was pointing at a truth. But perhaps not the deepest one. Because when you guide attention long enough, you begin to feel its source.
That source? It’s not noise. Or thought. Or even self. It’s care. You attend to what you care about. You look closely when you love. You return again and again, not because you must… but because you mean to.
Maybe attention is the currency of life. But Love…is the value it measures. And if that feels like a soft ending, good. Because some truths don’t arrive with fireworks. They arrive quietly, the moment you stop scrolling and start seeing again.
Yes, my first tweet was a little clickbaity. I played the game, not to steal attention, but to borrow it, and return it with something that matters. I hope I earned that trade.
That’s what Love does. It borrows attention, not to hold it, but to give it back deeper, truer.
In the end, seeing clearly is the first act of Love.
So...Thank you for reading. I hope it helped you to slow down and remember what really matters. Follow @ItsWalterEgo if that’s what you’re here for. And thank you to Naval, a mind that continues to challenge and inspire my own. https://x.com/ItsWalterEgo/sta...
