Not all warriors wear armor. Some wear sarees and carry milk pots. Meet Hirkani – the mother who defied a mountain for her child. Thread 🧵
A true story of love, fearlessness, and maternal strength that still echoes through the walls of history. When we think of towering structures, we often imagine skyscrapers like Burj Khalifa symbols of modern engineering and ambition.
But deep within the Raigad Fort in Maharashtra, India, stands another kind of Burj — not built to signify power, but to honor a mother’s courage that scaled cliffs, broke rules, and touched hearts. This is the story of Hirkani Burj, and the legend of Hirkani Bai, an ordinary milkmaid who became an extraordinary symbol of maternal valor.
The Night of Kojagari – When a Mother Became a Warrior During the glorious reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the Raigad Fort stood proud and impenetrable. Surrounded by cliffs and guarded by strict rules, the gates of the fort would shut at sunset and not reopen until dawn — no matter the situation.
On the festive night of Sharad Purnima, Hirkani Bai had climbed the fort to deliver milk for the celebrations. But she lost track of time amidst the joy and music. The gates closed. Panic struck. She had a nursing infant waiting for her at home alone with an elderly grandmother.
She begged the guards to open the gate. They refused. Rules were rules, even for the King himself. What happened next was nothing short of a miracle born from desperation.
A Descent into the Unknown When the gates refused to open, Hirkani did not accept defeat. She found a narrow edge of the fort — a dangerous cliff, where even the guards said “only water can go down, only air can come up.”
But that night, something stronger than fear gripped her: a mother’s love. Without ropes, without vision, without fear for her own life Hirkani began her descent, barefoot, bruised, bleeding, and guided only by the image of her hungry baby. She reached home alive. Her baby fed. Her soul at peace.
When Shivaji Maharaj Heard Her Tale The next day, her absence raised alarm. A search was conducted. When the truth reached Shivaji Maharaj, he summoned Hirkani.
She stood before the King with her baby, prepared for punishment. Instead, the King listened. And then, in a moment that immortalized his legacy not just as a ruler but as a protector of values, Shivaji Maharaj honored her.
He ordered that a Burj (watchtower) be constructed at the exact point of her descent so no other mother would ever have to take such a dangerous path. And so the Hirkani Burj was born a monument not of war, but of maternal love.
More Than a Fort — A Legacy of Love Even today, the Hirkani Burj stands tall, whispering a message to the winds: The courage of a mother can move mountains, scale cliffs, and rewrite history.
This story is more than folklore. It’s a testament to the resilience of women, the vision of a just leader, and the power of compassion.
In a world full of concrete towers, let's build monuments of empathy, respect, and courage. Let's celebrate leaders like Shivaji Maharaj, who valued strength in every form including the strength of women.
And most importantly, let’s remember — behind every ordinary face may lie an extraordinary story of sacrifice. A mother’s love knows no walls, no rules only the call of her child.
