On a recent trip to Palani temple, I traveled by train from Chennai to Dindigul and then by car to Palani. On my return journey, I spotted a mountain with a unique shape and steep peak. ⛰️ 🤔 Intrigued, I took a photo & researched it online, discovering to my surprise that 1/
it was home to an ancient Shiva temple with profound spiritual significance. 😊 This discovery caught my attention and I'd like to share what I learnt about the temple. The Swami in this temple is known as Mallikarjuna Swami & the hill is referred as Kondarangi Hills. 2/
The Lingam-shaped Hill is worshiped as Shiva similar to Thiruvannamalai & Velliangiri The temple is believed to be around 3,000 years old, housing a SwayambhuLingam, a naturally formed Shivalingam, signifying its divine origin. 3/
The temple is carved into the peak of a mountain. The hill stands at approximately 1165.86 meters (3825 feet) high, & it takes about two hours to reach the top. While challenging, railings are present to aid the climb. 4/ [📷 : instagram /the_kovai_explorer]
According to legend saints Kagabhajendra &Ganapati, reborn as crows visit the temple as a brief dusk storm. It is said that this storm starts from the foot of the hill, enters the temple & lasts only for a few seconds. A cave temple honoring Kagabhajendra sits atop the hill. 5/
It's said to be a place where the Pancha Pandavas sought exile and where Arjuna performed penance to gain powers. The temple at the hilltop is typically open daily from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM, except on Chitra Pournami and Mahashivratri day where it is open 24 hours. 6/
