In the (ḥanbalī) maḏhab it is sunnah for men to visit the graves of the dead Muslims, due to the ḥadīth: زوروا القبور، فإنها تُذَكِّرُ الآخرةَ “Visit the graves, for they remind you of the hereafter.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim) (1/5)
He should be facing the grave as if the person were alive (with the qiblah behind the visitor), and it should not involve specifically travelling to visit graves. As for visiting the graves of the kuffār, then it is mubāḥ (permissible). (2/5)
As for women, then it is makrūh for them to visit graves, and if it occurs from them what is ḥarām, then it becomes ḥarām. (3/5)
There is an exception when it comes to grave of the Prophet (ﷺ) and his two companions ʾAbū Bakr and ʿUmar bin al-Khaṭṭāb (رضي الله عنهما) as it is Sunnah to visit them, for both men and women. (4/5)
Shaykh al-ʾIslām Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) held and did tarjīḥ of the view that visiting graves for women is ḥarām, basing it on the Prophet (ﷺ) cursing those who visit graves from the women. (5/5)
