I have read Anthony Sutton’s “Wall Street and the Rise of Hitler.” He showed that powerful elements of American industry were helping the Nazis during WWII and the Soviets during the Cold War. Today, American industry is facilitating the rise of China (1/9):
For Sutton, this is because nefarious actors are conspiring to create a world government. I don’t know if this is true, but he makes a wrong assumption. He believes that there must be a strategic plan underlying all this behavior (why is America creating its own enemies?). (2/9)
Game theory suggests that there’s no plan because America does not need to have a geo-political strategy. Let me explain. We need to appreciate that America is unique for three reasons. (3/9)
First, it’s a continental fortress, and therefore invincible. It has no peer competitor in the Western hemisphere, and no one has ever contemplated invading America. If America were to disappear suddenly, the Western hemisphere hegemon would become, um, Canada. (4/9)
Second, America has infinite resources. America is self-sufficient by itself, and it can draw on all the resources of the Western hemisphere. America can always replenish its military by offering citizenship to families of immigrants who agree to fight (and prolly die). (5/9)
Third, America prizes individual achievement and private wealth above all. In this way, America is like Athens, in which citizens competed for the greatest glory, which led to crazy behavior (such as the 415 BCE invasion of Sicily, and warring against the entire world). (6/9)
Let me put this another way. Historically, if a group lost a war, then all the males of that group were put to the sword. If America loses a war, then there are some very unpleasant Congressional testimonies. (7/9)
If there can be no consequences, why wouldn’t private Americans finance America’s enemies? It boggles my mind that even today no one has been put in jail let alone criticized for shipping American technology and manufacturing to China. (8/9)
This game theory analysis suggests Trump’s erratic geo-political maneuvers are par for the course, and America’s foreign policy will only become more self-defeating. Stop looking for logic where none can be found. Just enjoy the fun times ahead. (9/9)
