The Trial of Nimishapriya (Thread) Nimishapriya Tomy Thomas, an Indian nurse from Kerala, moved to Yemen in 2012 In 2020, she was sentenced to death 3 times. Her execution is scheduled for July 16, 2025 What happened in those 8 years Complete story unfolds in this thread 1/17
In 2012, She had been offered a job at a health center outside Yemen’s capital, Sanaa She wanted to open her own clinic in Sanaa but its very difficult for foreigners to start their own business in war torn Yemen Country’s laws required local sponsorship for foreign-owned clinic
In 2014 She met to Talal Abdo Mehdi, a young Yemeni man whose family frequented the clinic where she worked Both came closer to each other. Nimisha Thomas saw in him a way to navigate the red tape of Yemen for her dream of own clinic
in April 2015, Nimisha with help of Talal opened her clinic. Soon both got married, though Nimisha was already married to Thomas who was living in Kerala that time but from there things started to going bad Both started to fight. According to Nimisha,
they never got married and Talal forged the marriage certificate and Talal was mentally and sexually exploiting her and Talal seized her passport. Matter reached to court and Court accepted that they are married
Things had become worse till 2016 Talal was sentenced to Jail on Nimisha's complaint of drug abuse and harassments Nimisha asked him to hand over her passport and signed the divorce papers but Talal didnt accept And then Nimisha committed a serious crime
In July 2017, Nimishapriya anesthetized Talal and then murdered him through suffocation She sought the help of a fellow Yemeni nurse, then they chopped his body, placed in polythene bags and dispose of the parts in a water tank and then both went into hiding
This was a very serious and brutal crime as per Yemen laws Nimishapriya was arrested in August 2017, following which she confessed to the crime In 2020, a local court sentenced her to death, not once, but three times. An appeals court later struck down one of the sentences
Supreme Court upheld the remaining two. She is currently lodged in Sanaa Central Jail. In January this year, Mahdi al-Mashat, president of the Houthi-controlled Supreme Political Council, approved the execution. Her sentence is scheduled to be carried out on 16 July 2025.
Under Yemen’s Sharia-based judicial system, the only path left is securing a pardon from the victim’s family in exchange for diyya, or blood money Money is not the problem but Victim's family has declined to pardon her
Supreme Court of India on Thursday agreed to hear Nimisha’s case on July 14 and asked the Centre to apprise it about any steps that it may have taken regarding the case But people should understand here - She has committed a serious crime in Yemen - She has confessed her crime
- Her case has gone through all legal scrutiny from local court to Supreme Court f Yemen - Yemen had always been friendly to India when needed Operation Raahat (2015) – Massive Support from Yemen During civil war in Yemen (2015), India launched Operation Raahat to evacuate
to evacuate its citizens and foreigners from the war-torn country. Despite the conflict and deteriorating conditions, local Yemeni authorities cooperated with Indian diplomats and the Indian Navy to facilitate the safe passage of civilians from Sana’a, Aden, and other parts.
Result: Over 4,600 Indians and nearly 960 foreign nationals (from 41 countries) were successfully evacuated. Significance: This was a major moment of Yemen’s tacit diplomatic support, showing willingness to assist India in humanitarian efforts.
Even in Nimisha Thomas case, Yemen fully cooperated with India While Yemen has generally not been lenient in serious criminal cases but still Yemen allowed Indian legal representation, and not obstructed diplomatic communications in multiple cases over the years
In past other minor cases or illegal visa cases involving Indians, Yemeni courts allowed Indian consular officials to assist the accused. India has occasionally secured reduced sentences for minor offenses but Nimisha has been sentenced for two deaths
My take 1) Nimisha is on death row coz of crime and not persecution. 2) Demanding blood payments work in Muslim society but not in tribal society like Yemen and it can backfire 3) Yemen has helped release nurses in the past Indian govt doesn't have much option to interfere in
