What Is Chitta? The Hidden Layer of Your Mind 😱 ...As Revealed in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. This will change the way you understand your own mind. Follow @_TheSanatani & Read this thread 🧵
📌 In modern psychology, you hear about: • Conscious mind • Subconscious • Unconscious But thousands of years ago, Maharshi Patanjali went deeper. He revealed a hidden layer beneath all thoughts... called Chitta. Let’s break it down 👇
📌 In Yogic science, your mind isn’t one thing. It’s made of 4 parts: 🔹 Manas – The part that processes sense data 🔹 Buddhi – The intellect (discrimination, decisions) 🔹 Ahamkāra – The ego (I-maker) 🔹 Chitta – The storehouse of impressions, samskāras, karma The deepest of
📌 Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra 1.2 says: "Yogash chitta-vritti-nirodhah" Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations (vrittis) of chitta. Not the mind. Not the thoughts. But the deep subconscious beneath thought. 👉 That’s where transformation happens.
📌 So what is Chitta? It’s your inner field of consciousness where all your experiences, memories, and karmic impressions are stored. Every desire, trauma, memory, fear... even from past lives.. is recorded here. It’s not just your mind. It’s your energetic blueprint.
📌 Let’s take an analogy: — Manas is your 5 sense assistants — Buddhi is your manager — Ahamkāra is your identity badge — Chitta is the silent hard disk storing everything You act today not just from thinking... But from what’s buried in your chitta.
📌 Chitta carries: • Samskāras – Mental impressions • Vāsanās – Subtle desires • Karmic seeds – The consequences waiting to sprout If Manas is the screen, Chitta is the backend code of your personality. 👉 Want to change your life? You have to rewrite the Chitta layer.
📌 Here’s how Yogis described the layers of mind: — Surface: Thoughts (vrittis) — Below: Emotions, ego (ahamkāra) — Deeper: Conditioned reactions (samskāras) — Core: Chitta, the original reflective consciousness 👉 This is where karma is stored, and liberation begins.
📌 How is Chitta affected? 👉 Every thought you repeat 👉 Every action you perform 👉 Every intention you carry …creates a samskāra, a groove in the chitta. This is how habits form, personalities evolve, and destinies are shaped.
📌 But here’s the secret: 👉 Chitta is not you. It’s a mirror that reflects Purusha... pure Consciousness. If it’s full of ripples (vrittis), the reflection is distorted. When it’s still, you see your true Self. This is the whole goal of Yoga.
📌 The Challenge? Chitta is rarely still. It’s constantly stirred by: 👉 Cravings and attachments 👉 Deep-rooted fears 👉 The illusion of ego 👉 Imprints carried across countless lifetimes The result? You're never present. You're reacting to stored programs.
📌 So what did Maharshi Patanjali recommend? Through Yoga, Tapas, Svādhyāya, and Ishvara-pranidhāna, the mind is stilled, and Chitta becomes pure. 👉 Only then does the true Self (Purusha) shine... without distortion. This is called Kaivalya — total freedom.
📌 Want to access your Chitta? Practice: — Japa (mantra repetition) — Dhyāna (deep meditation) — Satsang (noble company) — Pranayama (breath discipline) — Svādhyāya (scriptural self-study) Each of these begins to clear the chitta layer by layer.
👉 Modern psychology is just scratching the surface of what our Rishis saw: — Freud discovered the subconscious. — Patanjali mapped it, diagnosed it, and gave a manual to master it. Chitta is not a concept. It’s the gateway to liberation.
If your chitta is still, your life becomes still. No reaction. No fear. No craving. — Just clarity.
