1-What are Dharmashastras? They are ancient Hindu scriptures that define dharma (righteous duty), covering all aspects of life-ethics, social norms, rituals, law, and personal conduct. These texts formed the backbone of civil, legal & spiritual life in India for centuries.
2- Manusmriti (Laws of Manu) Oldest & most famous Dharmashastra Talks about 4 stages of life (ashramas) & 4 castes (varnas) Rules on marriage, daily duties, rituals, penance, and kingship. Often called the “Great Departure” for its social structure legacy.
3-Apastamba Dharmasutra Likely written between 450–350 BCE Focus on law, inheritance, property, rituals, and morality. Includes rare content like rules for self-control and even rebirth. One of the earliest and most practical legal codes.
4-Gautama Dharmasutra: One of the oldest law books. Systematized duties of varnas Standards for rituals, penance, government, & inheritance Strong legal-ethical foundation rooted in Vedic thought
5-Vasistha Dharmasutra Probably written around 100 BCE Focuses on ritual purity, penance & crimes Legal responses to theft, murder, and even suicide & self-killing Unique for addressing internal ethics alongside societal law.
6-Vishnu Smriti: 7th century CE Part of Vaishnava tradition Begins incorporating bhakti into Dharma One of the few Dharmashastras in dialogue form, making it accessible to the masses
7-Baudhāyana Dharmasutra: Authored by Sage Baudhāyana. Combines dharma with geometry, fire rituals, & Vedic math. Talks about forbidden foods, marriage, inheritance. Contains the earliest mention of the Pythagorean theorem in India.
8-VIKHANAS: Associated with the worship of Lord Shiva. Focus on purity, devotion & temple rituals. Inspired by teachings from Lord Shiva himself. Emphasizes spiritual life over worldly attachments.
