some thoughts about getting itasha done, from someone who's done it twice (๐งต):
one of the most common shortcomings of itasha is the obsession with wrapping the whole car. with complete wraps, the price skyrockets, it's easier to make the car look bad with a full wrap, and on less aggressive looking cars the design looks out of place.
when you aren't wrapping the entire body, it encourages you to make effective use of void spaces. designs need to fit the curvature and lines of the body. i'm a firm believer it's 99% of the time, the better way to design an itasha: https://x.com/Blaze_R34/status...
not every itasha needs to be a wide body drift car. but aggressive drift style liveries don't look at home on a simpler, subtler car. don't be afraid to go simple -- simple is clean, simple is smart. https://x.com/dawnonmonday/sta...
full-service itasha studios, where you drop your car off and they do art, design and install, is something I avoid. a full service studio has to keep clients happy. they're working against a clock. they don't want to spam you with questions and WIPs.
I know lots of em -- they're passionate, hard working people -- but you, as a client, should own as much of the design and art process as possible. the itasha will only look as good as you care about it. search for itasha designers, hire an artist, and pay a wrap shop.
vinyl will last multiple years outdoors, if you're using good vinyl. but the best purchase you'll ever make for an itasha is covered parking, ideally a garage. car covers or car ports work too. sun is the enemy of anything printed.
there are a million people with cool cars who are planning to get an itasha done but their car "isn't ready yet". set realistic goals for when to start work. your car does not need to be perfect. if it isn't brand new it will NEVER be perfect. wrap right over that shitty paint.
lastly the "what does it cost?" question. an itasha is the most substantial change you can make to a car. dont cheap out on the parts that matter. but your design will largely determine price. you can spend as much as $8,000 for a wrap. both mine, all in, were under $2,000 ea.
also shameless plug, both my itashas are designed by @sad__machines and you can take a look at his artbook about itasha as an artform here: https://yasoku.us/product/1000...
more musings: -cars have trim and door handles. Don't put a character's face right on the door handle. - you're painting a sculpture, not a canvas. - work with your paint. if your body isn't white or black use colors complementary or dyadic/triadic to your body paint.
@waifusquadvinyl Good thread. One of my regrets was rushing through and just taking art from online without asking etc.,
@CallMeKeima artist permission is very important. shit if you're on a budget I say ask an artist if you can use their existing work. but the commission I got from @SinnraArt was the best money I ever spent on a car

@WHart44 forever and always
@waifusquadvinyl Hey! I gotta say at first glance I thought this was in Japan. Not because of the scenery of course lol. (Also that stang would go hard in Japan) A lot of itasha in the west just don't hit the same (not always a bad thing) but I gotta commend yours, they feel authentic!
@HachiRokuuu ive been getting messages from the jp 71-73 mustang crowd LOL but if we want itasha to be better in the US we gotta lead by example
@waifusquadvinyl when can we teioify my bike?
@Ahoworksco twin I will hook you up with a designer
@waifusquadvinyl I wanna do this to my dirtbike, I feel like you don't see itashas off-road as much
@Chr0meCowboy itasha covered in dirt would go insane, im trying to bully a buddy to wrap his WR125
@waifusquadvinyl i've been kinda wanting to do a single-side wrap for my car but I feel like my honda accord is too "normie" to fit the vibe
@Venerac you absolutely can do it. if you wanna go cool put huge wheels on it and make it look like a BTCC car. if you wanna keep it understated talk to @dawnonmonday
@waifusquadvinyl Itasha pinstripe/racing stripe would go hard I fear
@AngrenostH boy do I have something for you
@waifusquadvinyl R1 wrap goes crazy ngl
@LaptopCrust CBR600RR
@waifusquadvinyl Doing that to a Mustang should actually be illegal
@Shotgun_Chuck go find one, fix it up, and do it the way you want
@waifusquadvinyl Im just thinking about putting twin turbo on my blue yamaha xj6, my first bike! Im wondering if its okay doing the wrapping myself since I'm living in the middle of nowhere.
@its_jinraven so here's another interesting thing people forget about, you dont need to go to "an itasha shop". there are most likely plenty of sign shops near you that specialize in wrapping vehicles, such as fleet vehicles and cop cars.
