In 2018, this 64-year-old CEO stole 1,774 $BTC & 28,589 $ETH. By 2023, he was arrested by the FBI. While awaiting trial, he disabled his ankle monitor and escaped. What he took with him made him one of the most wanted men alive🧵
Horst Jicha was the CEO of a company called USI-Tech. In 2017, he claimed he created the world's first automated Bitcoin trading platform. The hook? “Get 140% returns in 140 days.” It sounded like a dream and thousands fell for it.
Here he is at one of his dinner presentations👇. Someone in the audience asked a simple but critical question. Listen to how he answered. What did you notice?
Did you catch how he danced around the question and switched the topic? That’s usually your first clue something isn’t right. If the founder of a company can’t explain how they actually make money, that’s a massive red flag.
Despite this, USI-Tech exploded in popularity. They ran shiny ads, threw big conferences, and blasted social media with promotions. At one point, over 100,000 people invested their hard-earned money. But behind the scenes? It was a ticking time bomb.
USI-Tech wasn’t really making profits by trading Bitcoin. It was just an MLM dressed up to look legit. The only way investors got paid was by bringing in more people to buy crypto packages. Sound familiar?
By early 2018, U.S. regulators started sniffing around. Not long after, Jicha pulled the plug on U.S. operations and froze everyone’s accounts. Almost overnight, thousands of people couldn’t get to their money. And just when everyone thought it couldn’t get any worse, it did.
Soon after the shutdown, 1,774 $BTC and 28,589 $ETH vanished from the USI Tech address. It was quietly transferred into wallets controlled by Jicha and his inner circle. People were freaking out, demanding answers. Instead of making things right, he cooked up another scheme.
To calm the outrage, Jicha announced something he called “BTC 2.0.” He promised it would solve everything and let people withdraw their money again. But it was all smoke and mirrors. Withdrawals never reopened. By March 2018, everyone realized the truth: USI-Tech was Ponzi.
Thousands of people lost everything. While victims scrambled for help, Jicha disappeared off the grid. Years passed with no trace of him. Then, in December 2023, he resurfaced in the U.S. for a vacation and was arrested almost immediately.
He was finally caught and charged with: →Securities fraud →Wire fraud →Money laundering It looked like justice would finally be served. But another twist was coming.
After his arrest, Jicha was placed under home detention in New York on a $5 million bond guaranteed by his domestic partner and children. He was fitted with an ankle monitor to track his movements while he waited for trial. But he didn’t stick around.
He tampered with the monitor and vanished, again. He didn't care that he betrayed his family who will now be forced to pay the bond. He disappeared alongside the $230M worth of crypto that he stole.
The FBI immediately declared him wanted. Today, he’s still on the run, and is yet to be caught. The one thing he took along? Private keys to the $230 million worth of crypto he stole.
Thousands of people who trusted USI-Tech were left with nothing. Savings they’d built over decades gone in an instant. Some just wanted to build a better life. Others dreamed of finally achieving financial freedom. Instead, they were left with $0 and broken promises.
So, what’s the lesson here? USI-Tech is a tough reminder: If someone offers “guaranteed returns” or promises riches with zero risk, it’s probably a scam. Here’s how to protect yourself in crypto:
→Avoid platforms that reward you more for recruiting others than for actual investing. →If it promises “guaranteed returns,” it’s almost always a scam. →Stay away any project that lacks transparency on how profits are actually made.
