Google just gave everyone the power to build their own AI assistant. No coding. No subscription. 100% free. Here’s how to set yours up in under 5 minutes 👇
1. Go to Gemini ➡Visit http://gemini.google.com ➡Click "Gem Manager" ➡Hit "New Gem" Gems are custom AI assistants you design—Google even has pre-made ones like Brainstormer, Career Guide, and Coding Partner.
2. Name + Brain ➡Give your Gem a name. ➡Write its instructions (what it should do, how it should act). ➡Use the Magic Pencil ✏️ to auto-rewrite and improve them. You’re now creating your own custom AI assistant. 🛠
3. Feed it knowledge ➡In the “Knowledge” section, upload up to 10 PDFs or images your AI can reference. ➡Remove or replace them anytime. ➡This is how you make your AI smarter than ChatGPT.
4. Test before launch ➡Use the Preview window to see exactly how your AI will respond. ➡Adjust instructions until it feels perfect.
5. Edit anytime ➡Go back to Gem Manager, click Edit, tweak instructions or knowledge. ➡Hit Update and your AI instantly levels up.

@heygurisingh I’d be all over this if I could upload 1000 documents
@hashtagERTW True — right now it’s capped at 10 files per Gem. But you could split your documents across multiple Gems (like “Part 1,” “Part 2”) and still keep them all accessible from your Gem Manager.
@heygurisingh Wait… so I can make my own ChatGPT but with my company data… for free?!
@ihteshamit Yep — just upload your company manuals, policies, or sales decks in the Knowledge section. It’ll answer using your own data instantly.
@heygurisingh Is a gem the same thing as a gpt?
@ESchwaa Think of a Gem as Google’s no-code custom Gemini, great for Workspace-native workflows. A GPT is OpenAI’s customizable ChatGPT with optional API Actions and a public store.
@heygurisingh Time to build an assistant that reminds me to use my other assistants.
@Excel4Freelance List your other Gems + when to use each, add a quick daily check-in prompt, pin it in Gemini, and set a Calendar reminder that links to it.
@heygurisingh Not shareable when using Google workspace.
@JoeSabado Right — Gems are tied to your account in Workspace, so there’s no native “share” yet.
@heygurisingh this is a game changer, no-code ai assistants are big. loving the flexibility with pre-made gems too, makes it accessible for everyone.
@alex_prompter Totally agree — the combo of no-code setup + pre-made Gems means you can start instantly, even if you’ve never built an AI before. And since you can still tweak them with your own files and prompts, they’re flexible enough for advanced workflows too.
@heygurisingh amazing..thanks for the simple breakdown.
@sharyph_ Google really made the setup simple — you can go from zero to a working AI assistant in minutes without touching a single line of code.
@heygurisingh This is actually wild. No more paying $30/mo for simple AI assistants.
@nextool_ai True — and since it’s built into Gmail/Docs, you don’t need a separate platform. Plus, you can edit it anytime as your needs change.
@heygurisingh Google quietly dropping features that could replace half of Fiverr.
@godofprompt 100%. Graphic design, copywriting, research… you can create niche-specific Gems for each task and run them side-by-side.
@heygurisingh So basically… I can upload all my uni notes and make a study tutor?!
@alex_prompter Exactly. And since you can add up to 10 PDFs or images, it can reference all your lecture slides + readings in one place.
@heygurisingh I just made a Gem that drafts all my client emails in our exact tone of voice. Mind blown.
@JafarNajafov That’s the beauty of the instructions section — describe your brand tone once, and every response stays on-brand.
@heygurisingh I just noticed these yesterday. I have several ideas.
@UN_C0MM0NCENTS That’s awesome — the best part is you can test every idea in minutes.
@heygurisingh “Just built my own AI travel planner in 10 minutes… Google might have just killed half the startup market
@hasantoxr Exactly! With file uploads + custom prompts, you can load it with destination guides, itineraries, and budget sheets so it plans trips like a pro.
@heygurisingh Not me creating a D&D dungeon master AI in 5 minutes
@rryssf_ Genius. You could even upload your campaign notes and rulebooks so it remembers every plot twist and NPC detail.
