Working with seniors confirms how common chosen names are. Old blokes are like Hi I’m Jack and I can’t find their record so after quite some time they say Well it’s Robert. But I go by Jack. Because my middle name is John. Whatever queen live your truth

@figgled Yeah my grandfather was Jack because his name was John and my grandma was Jill because she’s Margaret but she’s married to Jack so Jack and Jill

@iPad_Latino Omg of the titular hill I’ve heard about them

@figgled Every second old bloke is like this! My grandad was Jack and everyone assumed his real name was Edward and then we died we all learned it was something else lmao.

@MildCuthbert It’s so common! And almost always blokes isn’t it

@figgled my step-grandfather: well everyone calls me Får. because im a grandad. but also Spud because im irish. no im not swedish even a bit the Får thing is just amusing because im insufferable. but strangers call me John. and also my legal name is Daniel

@do_not_test_me Okay he sounds extraordinary

@figgled Imagine being Robert John for 80 years just to end up as Jack.

@figgled Someone used to call me Jack because they’re were adamant it was short for Jonathan lol

@figgled My mother’s family had nicknames. It’s hard for me to remember who was who. Uncle Butchie, Uncle Cuddy. Buster. Not their real names.

@figgled My grandfather’s name was Mickey but everyone in his life called him Dick, because he was unfortunately quite a dick to most people throughout his life

@figgled First time nickname understander. Holy shit holy fuck

@figgled I thought my grandads name was timothy my whole childhood, my brother even has it as his middle name only to find out his real name is edward and people just used to call him tiny tim and it stuck

@figgled I have two uncles that go by the same name because when the older one went to the military they started calling his brother by his name. Funnily enough it’s not even his actual name either

@figgled My mother is one of 11 siblings and not one of them uses their legal name. When I asked her why she had no explanation. 🤷‍♀️

@figgled Every guy in my family has the same first name; it's really fucking hilarious when outsiders call for one of them because absolutely fucking none of them go by their first name and so we're like "exactly which one and who are you asking for?" so yeah, same.

@figgled My aunt’s father’s name is Howard but he is known as Jim.

@figgled My grandma's children were David, Doug, Dawn, Dean, Dena, except Doug was actually named Charles, which became real confusing when he wanted to join the military and they started calling asking for his government name.

@figgled According to the Social Security Administration, the most common unisex name from 1880 to about 1945 was Willie, and when i found this out I assumed all the female Willies were example of this. But no, it seems Willie was a fairly common southern name for girls.

@figgled I knew a guy for YEARS as Mike. One day I caught a glimpse of his credit card and his first name was Robert

@figgled I called my grandad Henry for almost my whole life before it being revealed that his name is actually Alexander and he was called Henry because he looked like a cartoon character named Henry.

@figgled My grandma's name has been White (yeah but in serbian at least alskdk) her entire life, all friends and family called her that and only when I was a teen and found her random old passport only to read Milina and I was like who tf? And she was like me :D and I was like ?? No????

@figgled Jack was a nickname for John. He’s probably Robert jr and went by his middle name

@figgled Both of my grandfathers went by chosen names for some reason

@figgled Not the same, but I have an older in-law who for her whole life thought her middle name was Jean, but recently learned it was actually Gene (the male version). Gene wasn’t a family name. I can only assume either her parents just had no clue the difference, or the doctor messed up

@figgled I didn’t know until my uncles funeral that his name was different 😂

@figgled A guy at the retirement home I worked at was called Dave. His name was Charles. His middle name also wasn’t David.

@figgled I never got around to asking him where/how the name came about, but my grandfather most commonly went by "Spanky" and only really went by "Frank" for legal/professional stuff.

@figgled My grandma once told me she didn’t know my grandpa’s legal name until a few days before the wedding she was like who tf is this that’s not my fiancé’s name

@figgled my grandma went by Ruth her entire life, I didn’t learn her actual name was Helen until I was an adult

@figgled People didn’t get birth cerificates until they needed to retire. My father had thought his name was Charlie Lee his entire life. Gets his birth certificate in his 60s. His names was Charles Howard. He legally changed it to Charlie Lee. My mother in law misspelled her middle name.

@figgled My dad's side of the family does this thing where the dad's first and last name is passed to a son, but everybody goes by their middle name. My dad and late granda had this structure, I would have if I'd been a boy, and when I wasn't, my sister would have if she'd been a boy.

@figgled One of my uncles is named Delmer. Goes by Moe. And I had an uncle who went by Mousey because he ate mouse poison as a kid

@figgled both my grandma's are/were called jane but neither of their first names are/were jane. they both chose to use their middle name jane.
