---THREAD--- This is the most important story I’ve told. It’s my story. I’ve waited five years to share it, and I’m ready now. I’m Anna Giaritelli. The DC police are covering up crime. I know because they covered up what happened to me. https://www.washingtonexaminer...

Five years ago, I was violently attacked and sexually assaulted in broad daylight in Washington, D.C., by a homeless man. He served time in federal prison for what he did to me. But if you look for evidence that the attack happened in the @DCPoliceDept crime statistics, you won’t

@DCPoliceDept The truth of what happened to me and the D.C. government’s role in it is as much a public scandal as it is a personal trauma. D.C. police covered up the unspeakable wrong that the stranger did to me. Even though a judge sentenced my attacker to hard time in prison, D.C. police

@DCPoliceDept The extent of crime in D.C. has been debated since Trump announced on Monday that he would take federal action to crack down on DC crime. But if the public wants to have an honest conversation about crime in D.C., the @DCPoliceDept will first have to be honest about how

@DCPoliceDept I was a Washingtonian for seven years. I was saving up money to buy a condo and planned to spend the next few decades in Washington, the intersection of politics and media. D.C.’s crime problem was something you lived with. You took Ubers and Lyfts, told others if you were

@DCPoliceDept On a Saturday morning in 2020, I walked out of my apartment on Capitol Hill to mail a package at a post office several blocks from the U.S. Capitol. I put on my sweatshirt and sweatpants then headed out the door. I never made it to the post office. https://www.washingtonexaminer...

@DCPoliceDept Just one block from my apartment building’s entrance, I was attacked by a large man well over six feet tall. He charged at me for a reason that I still do not understand. In broad daylight and on well-traveled 2nd Street NE next to Union Station, I fought to get away as he

@DCPoliceDept Why am I writing this op-ed? Despite my background working with federal law enforcement, it was only through my experience as a victim that I learned personally of two ways that D.C. police and the courts fail the public. I share those now with the hope that they inform the

@DCPoliceDept My attacker was arrested on the street months later, charged, and pleaded guilty to a sex abuse charge nearly two years later. MPD’s “Crime Cards” online statistics page omits mentioning it, though. Do you know what that communicates to a victim? How invalidating that is?

@DCPoliceDept When I asked @DCPoliceDept in 2020 why my incident was not on its crime map, an MPD spokesman said the city only includes 1st degree felonies under its crime stats. That would mean that for every person robbed, assaulted, or sexually abused in anything less than egregious ways,

@DCPoliceDept In a follow-up email to @DCPoliceDept this week, an MPD spokesperson stated after a back-and-forth exchange that the map includes some sex abuse charges, but not all of them. In my case, my attacker’s crime against me, which landed him in prison, is still not listed. The 54 sex

@DCPoliceDept The D.C. Police did do something right. The day of my attack, the police collected my clothes for DNA evidence. About two months later, they contacted me to say they had had a match to the DNA of a homeless man who had been previously arrested. Police arrested him, but he was

@DCPoliceDept Trial proceedings were set to begin in the fall of 2020, but amid the George Floyd riots in downtown Washington, it was delayed until early 2021. Then, the early 2021 start was delayed until the end of 2021. The U.S. Attorney’s office assured me it was not because the federal

@DCPoliceDept The man who attacked me was arrested by diligent DC police officers on 5 separate incidents as we waited to go to trial. But after every arrest, the judge permitted his immediate release, even when he was caught in public with a machete. https://www.washingtonexaminer...

@DCPoliceDept I have thought about these failures by the police and courts for the past five years, but I have not been sure how to bring attention to them. Right now, we have a rare chance to bring meaningful change. I have shared my story. Will anyone hear it and respond? Please share my

@Anna_Giaritelli @DCPoliceDept To my knowledge, crime statistics do not show individual cases. It shows a number. How on earth did you identify that your case was not shown on their website? Im sorry for what happened to you though, its horrible and rapists truly deserve the chair.

@nopresence2 @DCPoliceDept In 2020, MPD showed individual pins on a map for sex abuse crimes. They're since switched to a less specific model.

@Anna_Giaritelli @DCPoliceDept What does sexually assaulted mean? Why aren’t you using the word “rape”?

@Anna_Giaritelli @DCPoliceDept I hope he sends the military to Chicago next. Then, these cities… @Grok List the cities with the highest violent crime rates.

@Anna_Giaritelli @DCPoliceDept I am so sorry for what you had to go through. It is a crying shame when criminals are protected over victims and crime statistics are reported based on what will help/harm a particular political party.

@Anna_Giaritelli @DCPoliceDept I'm so sorry you had to live through this, and now as the democrats are trying to lie and say it's perfectly safe when it's not. Is their hatred for Trump so bad when he says he's going to clean up D.C. and they say why, it's coming down. When nothing could be further from the

@Anna_Giaritelli @DCPoliceDept Decades ago, I never hesitated to go to downtown DC by myself during day. But most recently, in the last ten years, it has become dangerous. I’ve seen homeless everywhere. The stench of urine and pot pervade.

@Anna_Giaritelli @DCPoliceDept Anna, thank God you were rescued & survived. I'm sorry for the trauma you suffered twice. I'm beginning to believe all governments [city, county, state, federal] lie, withhold information or skew information to their advantage. You are a strong woman of character, keep fighting

@Anna_Giaritelli @DCPoliceDept I’m just so sorry that happened to you.

@Anna_Giaritelli @DCPoliceDept You know why they under report crimes, right? Obama and Holder put the screws to police depts and schools because the percentage of black crimes grossly exceeded their percentage of the population. Obama & Holder set out to stop that ... the result was hiding black crimes.

@Anna_Giaritelli @DCPoliceDept Thank you for speaking up and telling the truth. I am so sorry you went through this horrific event and this criminal did not get put away for a long time, like he should have been!

@Anna_Giaritelli @DCPoliceDept Oh, I am so sorry this happened to you, Anna. Hugs

@Anna_Giaritelli @DCPoliceDept Anna, thank you for sharing your story and so sorry this happened to you. I cannot imagine the trauma you suffered and likely still suffer from today as brutal as this whole experience has been. Sadly, Washington DC isn't the only place this happens: Chicago has been "fixing"

@Anna_Giaritelli @DCPoliceDept Im so so sorry. This shows how little women are valued - it's a crime against humanity and our Constitution!

@Anna_Giaritelli @FinalBattle24 @DCPoliceDept Sorry, that is horrible. Time to clean up the predators and evil in our country.

@Anna_Giaritelli Thank you for telling your story, even if it’s not what people wanna hear! They are covering crime statistics across the country! I am so sorry that happened to you and I really do appreciate you telling your story. We are in America. We need to keep people safe. I hope you the

@Anna_Giaritelli @DCPoliceDept I’m so sorry this happened to you. Thank you for being brave and exposing this. I hope it saves many other women 🙏🏻

@Anna_Giaritelli @DCPoliceDept Disgraceful and disgusting leadership!
