Sabine loves to talk about all the problems of science and the terrible incentives skewing research and scientists’ motivations. What I’ve yet to see her discuss is the incentives that afflict YouTubers, including what kind of videos about science get you more attention.

@skdh Sure, here are some things that work: 1. Present yourself as a renegade truthteller standing up to a corrupt establishment. 2. Explain that mainstream sources are lying to you, but your channel will provide the hard truths. 3. Imply nefarious forces are trying to censor you.
@skdh 4. Flatter your audience that by following your channel, they are displaying nuance & independent thinking. 5. Present all criticism as bad faith- ideally, also frame as self-serving efforts to protect funding/authority. 6. Offer 'heterodox' takes that pander to your audience.
@skdh @C_Kavanagh With all due respect Sabine I think you're great at understanding what works and becomes viral on YouTube and what angles to take to present information. And YouTube has its own set of incentives which can challenging don't you agree?

@skdh @C_Kavanagh Why do you do this? We all know that when you do a brave-truthteller video it gets the views - when you stick to boring but true science, it gets squat. The tiny issue is that the former is, in terms of accuracy or substance, massively lacking.
