Seed oils were industrial waste. 1860s — Toxic waste from cotton industry 1911 — Rebranded as Crisco 1940s — Marketed as heart healthy 1950s — Doctors push seed oils 2020s — Linked to obesity, heart disease, etc. How industrial waste became your diet. A thread 🧵
It started with cotton. Cottonseed oil started as toxic waste. Factories used it in lamps, lubricants, candles. Then, Factories dumped it because it was too toxic to eat. Then a few clever businessmen asked: “What if we bleach it, deodorize it, and sell it as food?”
1911: Crisco launched. P&G (Procter & Gamble) hydrogenated cottonseed oil and marketed it as a replacement for lard and butter. Crisco = “Crystallized Cottonseed Oil.” It was pure corporate spin… turning waste into profit.
How did they sell it? Not by taste. Not by nutrition. By marketing. They gave away free cookbooks, convincing Americans to replace butter with “modern science” in a can.
Advertising blitz followed: 🔹Cookbooks re-written to feature Crisco 🔹Doctors bribed to promote it By the 1930s, seed oil replaced animal fat in kitchens.
Then came World War II. Animal fats were rationed. Seed oils filled the gap. Soy, canola, and corn oil entered the American diet on a massive scale. What was once industrial waste became “everyday cooking oil.”
Then came Ancel Keys in the 1950s. He blamed saturated fat (butter, meat, eggs) for heart disease. Seed oils were pushed as the “scientific” solution. The food pyramid was born. The “lipid hypothesis” was born… without solid science.
Later, the sugar industry paid scientists to pin heart disease on fat instead of sugar. Both the seed oil & sugar industrial worked pointed at fat. Industry-funded “science” shaped America’s diet.
What are seed oils, really? • Soybean • Corn • Cottonseed • Canola • Sunflower • Safflower • Grapeseed All highly processed with solvents like hexane, then bleached and deodorized. To look even edible…
The problem? Seed oils are loaded with unstable omega-6 fats. When heated, they oxidize. Oxidized oils = inflammation. Inflammation = the root of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, cancer, and hormonal disorders.
Seed oils also sneak into everything: Chips. Cookies. Salad dressings. Fast food. Even baby formula. If it comes in a package, there’s a good chance it’s soaked in seed oils.
The replacement game: They took natural animal fats… And Replaced them with deodorized, ultra processed waste oils from industry. Then told us it was “progress.”
Modern crisis: By 2000s, Americans got ~20% of calories from seed oils. Never before in human history have we eaten this much omega-6. And our "chronic disease" rates skyrocketed.
The truth: Seed oils were never food. They were industrial waste turned into a “health product” through marketing lies. Seed oils weren’t discovered. They weren’t invented. They were repurposed waste. A marketing scam turned into a “health trend.”
Follow for more hidden history. Share to wake others up. Eat whole foods. Ditch processed junk. Seed oils = industrial scam. And now you know.
@alizaeteri Id venture to guess in the 1940s seed oils boomed even more as industrial and machine lubricants etc. And they could also be deoderized, bleached, etc, which were then also sold as edible. The market as machine lubricant/fuel was likely much larger than the edible markt share🤷♂️
