What if your information environment, the institutions you trust to tell you things, to correct mistakes and offer differing views because they presumably care that what they’re telling you is as correct and comprehensive as possible, or at least varied enough to deepen your

@havivrettiggur If the narrative isn’t supported by the facts, just omit or lie about the facts, and if an outright lie supports the narrative, publish it. That’s the current state of news media, written and on air.

@havivrettiggur How do we fix it? This idea that “democracy dies in darkness” is fair (assuming, as I do, that this quote stands for the idea is that without a free press democracy is not viable - although perhaps the authors mean something else), but is it more damaging to democracy that so

@havivrettiggur Yes. And it's not just the media. And what we notice about foreign & international bodies are true domestically too. Much of the political tribalism today centers around the question: Whom do you fear & mistrust more? The elected populist or the institutions fighting him.

@havivrettiggur Since 10/7, it’s been eye opening to see how prevalent this type of reporting has been. Witnessed a less extreme but, just as noticeable example when listening to MSNBC coverage of Rasah Alawieh being refused entry into the country. The reporter claims she was deported

@havivrettiggur Fascinating! Any chance you deep dive into this here or in a podcast? Has it 1. always been like this 2. occurring at particular periods in history 3. In its scope, is a new phenomena. Thanks for the great work, Haviv.

@havivrettiggur Read media reports relating to any topic in which you- the reader- have expertise. Did they get it right? Were they close? Was there a good faith effort to be neutral/factual? If the answer to the above is no, why would you assume that the topic you know about is an exception?

@havivrettiggur This is truly disturbing. And the increasing use of AI will only make this worse.

@havivrettiggur Come now, are you really just now arriving at this conclusion?

@havivrettiggur Please, Haviv. This report jumps from KR toting a medical kit to being attacked in the street. It completely omits him charging into the area with an automatic rifle. This is manipulative horseshit. Awful example to support your point.

@havivrettiggur One of the most tragic facets of this has been that the "alt-media" has turned out to be just as bad. So, Joe Rogan will engage in emotional reasoning and repeatedly and maliciously make false claims and people like Shapiro and B. Weiss will tell us what a great job he does.
