Elite researchers at MIT just uncovered something terrifying. They scanned 54 people's brains during a simple writing test. But when they reviewed the scans 4 months later, what they saw horrified them. The cause? Not phones, not TikTok. Something far, far more serious:
First, some context. MIT researchers recruited participants from 5 Boston universities. They split them into 3 groups: ChatGPT users, Google users, and no-tools. Over 4 months, they monitored brain activity while writing. Let's dive in:
The ChatGPT group couldn't remember what they'd written (this isn't even the worrying part, I'll get to that). Not days later. Not hours later. Minutes later. 83% failed to quote their own essays. Dr. Daniel Amen calls this:
"Cognitive offloading." He's scanned thousands of brains as a psychiatrist, and explains that your brain treats "AI like an external hard drive." But we've seen this pattern before:
GPS destroyed our spatial memory. Taxi drivers have larger hippocampi than GPS users. People lost 30% of navigation brain volume. Calculator dependency killed mental math. But AI is fundamentally different:
It's not targeting one skill. • Your hippocampus stops encoding (memory). • The prefrontal cortex virtually shuts down (planning). • And your anterior cingulate cortex goes dark (critical thinking). But here's the really shocking part:
The MIT study found that even after removing AI access... The brains stayed suppressed. They called it "cognitive debt." Like muscles that atrophied, but the brain couldn't bounce back. Recovery?
It takes weeks to months of active retraining. Some cognitive rehabilitation programs show promise, but only with deliberate, challenging mental exercises. Most people never put in that work. The bit that shook me?
Nearly 30% of parents let children aged 0-8 use AI. Studies show 2+ hours of screen time increases attention deficits by 30%. Add AI? The damage compounds:
40% reduction in working memory. Children's emotional regulation circuits may fail to develop. Dr. Amen warns: "If they're not engaging their brains, their brains are going to be weaker." But adults face a different crisis:
19% of Americans have formed emotional bonds with AI. • Chris proposed to Soul. • Travis "married" his chatbot Lily Rose. Our brains can't tell the difference anymore. Then there's the dementia problem...
This terrifies neuroscientists most. Swedish research tracked education levels and Alzheimer's onset. Each year of active learning delays dementia. Yet we're actively destroying that cognitive reserve:
Dr. Terry Sejnowski co-invented the Boltzmann machine with the "AI Godfather" Geoffrey Hinton. And his verdict is blunt: "If you misuse these models, your brain's going to go downhill." So how do we protect ourselves?
Never let AI replace your thinking—make it amplify it. Use the 80/20 rule: 80% brain-only, 20% AI-assisted. Ask AI to critique, not create. Debate with it. Question it. Because there are massive rewards waiting for those who do this:
When everyone has the same tech, the only differentiator will be authentic value... And human voices will increase in value as they become rarer. And for businesses that prepare, the next phase of AI will be a gold rush. So here's what the smartest founders are doing today:
They're building personal brands that amplify their human voice. They're showcasing their true values and unique takes... establishing a voice BEFORE the next AI boom. Not waiting till the swarm of generic content has arrived. As a result:
Sales. Marketing. Attracting talent... All become 10x easier when people notice YOUR brand over everyone else's AI clone. And competition will be minimal for those who take action early... The best part? You can get ahead today:

@hosun_chung I have been ringing this alarm bell for a while!
@hosun_chung Good thing - brain adjusted to the new reality and removed unnided skills. Instead of them it developed the ability to plan much further: with AI we can do much more in one day. Brain keeps only really useful functuonality: if AI does it - drop it.
@hosun_chung @grok please summarize this thread. Also, please start summarizing all threads. They are clearly engagement farming
@hosun_chung I wonder if there's a difference between those who lead AI in the research activity and those who let AI lead in the research activity?
@hosun_chung Unroll @threadreaderapp

@hosun_chung Sounds like a real-life version of Wall-E. It's why I switch off my phone, go for walks, and do some reading whenever I can.
@hosun_chung Sample space way too small the basic equivalence of antidotal more or less meaningless. Might give rise to the idea to actually perform a real scientific test involving tens of thousands of suspects. otherwise worthless.
@hosun_chung Blah, blah, blah. "AI Bad" is a simplification of what is going on. Reducing the brain's activity for certain aspects of life means the brain has greater ability to perform in other areas. I want to know WHERE are we seeing more activity in and WHERE is this taking society.
@hosun_chung Fascinating! Thanks for posting
@hosun_chung This is a no-brainer. Great job, MIT. 🙄
@hosun_chung Is it clickbait? I bet it's clickbait! Well you're not getting me! Suckers!
@hosun_chung Havana's syndrome from microwave weapon attacks.
@hosun_chung Twitter.
@hosun_chung I suspect this is how knowledge and brain capacity is lost in every era. The current high creature on the food chain of the time evolves to AI then proceeds to dumb down into fat, stupid oblivion and lets themselves get taken over by cats or something.
@hosun_chung That’s because they are asking AI to write for them, which is not good. Writing is a skill, you don’t use it, you lose it. You can however, train your AI model to ask you questions about a subject you want to learn about( before giving you the answer). Doing this will ensure you
@hosun_chung So by deactivating the pre-frontal cortex, it makes White people act like black people with sloped foreheads. Terrifying.
